1. What are the differences between the companies that offer domain name selling> I am under the impression that there is no service involved - i buy the name and dont talk to the company again. Am i wrong? Is buying from the cheapest a bad move or are the $20/year sites just charging a premium price for nothing?
2. If I buy a domain name from Company A and host the page on Company B and decide that I want to change my hosting company from Company B to Company C, will Company A have anything to do with the change? Will i need to have a "transfer domain" option or something or is this something i look for with my hosting company?

1. IMO anyone with a large business wont mind paying 20$/year for a domain from some company who seems to be more reliable for example NetworkSolutions. But it is not feasible for resellers and teens and amateurs who are not setting up a site for profits. However it doest mean the low cost will result in poor service or reliability. Enom, NameCheap etc are pretty reliable and offer domains for less than 10 dollars.

2. You dont ever have to transfer the domain if your hosting company changes. You have to reset the Domain nameservers in your domain account. The hosting provider will tell you the nameservers. For example it will look like this DNS1.ABCHOST.COM and DNS2.ABCHOST.COM. The domain can remain with the same registar for one year or for life [actually you are allowed to renew for 10 years maximum at a time....after that you can renew again for another 10 years]

There may be some legal issues or which you may prefer to register in a company within your courts jurisdiction. Like for example I can always pull them up for deficient service in my country's consumer courts for even a 10 dollar cost domain or hosting. But it certainly is not practical to do the same for a 10 dollar domain booked from a company who is half way across the globe.
