My gf has this annoying habit and she has nails that look horrible.
She tried bitter solutions and all. After 2 days, she'd get used to the bitterness. Sigh.
I think the only way to stop one with this addiction is via hypnosis.

Hehe i used to have this bad habbit too. Main reason was stress. Now that's mostly over

I used to until I got braces put on my teeth. Can't anymore since it just feels very unnatural. Which is a good thing, my nails have never been longer then they are now (and they are still pretty short)
