Question

WHHQ.net is having some special deals of giving away free servers, only for $99 per month. what do you guys think of this? I don't think they are one of the better hosting companies, but it seems to be a good deal.

Any suggestions on a dedicated server for a site with medium hit count and no need for fancy stuff? I'll also need to host some other sites on the server, see about 100 of them, all low hit sites.

thanks a lot. I'm new in this field and hope to learn sth here.

jiong

You should do a search for whhq here, scriptkeeper forums and sitepoint etc. Always do a search when considering hosts. They have been discussed before. I am not going to base my comments off of others experiences, but I will say that you probably know what seems right, and what seems too low (and good) to be true.

Thumbs down Stay Away!

Oh Gawd...Don't even think about hosting with WHHQ. I once used them for Virtual Hosting (I didn't know much about hosting then - Unlimited Transfer, Space, E-mail...yeah right.) To make a long story short, my site was down more than it was up, you only had something like 10mb of space, they didn't give you any of the features that they offered, and getting in touch with them was impossible! I called them a million times trying to cancel my account, they said ok - I was still getting charged last month on my credit card, and that was going on for about 6 months. Finally my credit card company got my money back, and my account was cancelled...don't waste your time.

I'm sure the dedicated servers are just as bad, if not worse.

Unhappy whhq - are you in your senses buddy ?

Hey man
Come on. You cannot trust your hosting requirements on a company which does not reply your enquiry for two weeks or more. Besides even after I complained to them, there was no response.

The offer so good, that I wanted to take it immediately, but then I realised that "I am saved"

A company who does not reply on sales call, do you expect them to handle support ?

You want to be careful about hosts which do not specify how much bandwidth you get a month when dealing with dedicated servers, why would someone let you have a box sit on a T3 line and let you use up all their bandwidth.... Also you might want to check into the quality of their hardware, from looking at their 99.00 servers they dont look like their very robust, i mean just telling by looking at the cases you can tell their using very low end periperals, do you want a server which has a tendency to fail because of generic hardware. We use only name brand periperals in all of our servers, it costs us more in the long run but keeps up a quality of service which is needed in this industry.

JTAN

I would say if their web page wont even load thats a bad sign plus Sun servers are 10x more expensive than a intel box... theres no way they could do that as far as i can tell anyways..

cbaker17,

When has the web page not loaded? We've had no reported down time in the last few days.

Also, we are using Sun Sparc's for $99/mo. They aren't brand new models, but are great for exactly what jiong is looking for.

Jiong, if you have any questions, just post them here or e-mail me. I'd be glad to help you out.

I would like to stand corrected, the page did finally load but it took awhile amd im on a T3 connection here, may be your server hung for a second I dont know, is cached now so i cant see if it still does it...

Alot of companys used used hardware for their customers, we ourselved dont, when a customer hosts with us they can be guerenteed their getting a brand new system that has been properly burned it, all hardware has its failure points can you really trust a server that you count on for mission critical functions to used hardware??

Not to put your company down, but its up too the customer on whether they want to take a gamble. Also you fail to inform on the specs of the sun server.

cbaker,

Where are you located in the world? We have various checkpoints serving from France to Pennsylvania to Michigan to Washington. No one has reported any slowness in the last few days. So the problem is most likely on your side, or a bad connection between us. If you weren't able to access us, that would most likely mean we won't be able to access you if there is a faulty line somewhere in the middle between our connection. But we have several lines, and we'd most likely go down the fastest one.

Secondly, we have not used any "used" hardware for any of our dedicated customers for Cobalt RaQ 3's and Linux servers.

What's the gamble that the customer is taking? JTAN has been in business for nine years, and is a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania BBB.

Finally, we do not offer exact price quotes on our web site. You'll have to excuse the maintenance on the web site though. We quote our servers as being as low as $99/mo. JTAN uses these Sun Sparc's for our ProShell machines, and we purchased several backup systems which we no longer need. Instead of throwing them away, we would like to offer them to customers for a very low price of $99/mo. I am not positive of the specs myself, but if the customer was interested enough, I could look them up.

These Sun Sparc machines have been used by countless companies and have proven to be excellent in quality. And they can easily host 100 small web sites.

To get back to the original point...

I once ordered a dedicated sever from WHHQ - that was a month ago and I'm about to sign a contract for an Alabanza server. Perhaps that makes my opinion clear.

The server that I ordered was set up late, the nameservers that I specified were not set up, and the hard drive was half the size it was supposed to be. My emails on the subject were then totally ignored (as were many previous and subsequent mails).

I have had a full refund, but would never do business with them again.

Speedie.
