proxmox vs vmware esxi
Hello friends
I would like an opinion
I'm getting a new server for virtualization
Currently I'm using openvz plus I want to be able to create windows environments too
I've used vmware esxi version for free a while back but it's been years
I am in the doubt between vmware esxi (free) or proxmox latest version
could anyone give me feedbacks to help me which one to choose?
I will create cpanel / plesk machines
and machines for java developments
I appreciate everyone's attention

We are using proxmox for a very long time and I can say it's pretty stable. I can highly recommend it.

I've been using Proxmox on multiple nodes for some years, it runs flawless with no problems, some stuff will need some bit manual made automation because proxmox lacks it.

I recommend proxmox, it's free, stable, and most importantly huge community to ask if you have issues.

Thank you all, I opted for proxmox 5.2
as a former vmware esx user
the only negative point of proxmox compared to vmware is the console for KVM
I found it much slower to perform the O.S installation process as the mouse cursor moves slowly
Thank you everyone's answer.

I use both solutions for many years. Both is very stable. However the free ESXI have limited features, so if you want to keep the cost low i recommended to go in Proxmox.

This features with vmware cost many many US$.
Proxmox have all the above features. If you want to use this features i recommended to buy also a support plan for proxmox. It is very cheap: https://www.proxmox.com/en/proxmox-ve/pricing

I am using esxi. Installed on USB3.0 .. As icehosting says free esxi have limited functions .. but for my use it's perfect.
Comparing speeds ... esxi WINS always.

I would recommend VMware esxi. We almost exclusively run vmware with vcenter and vcloud. Check into the VSPP program.

Hello,
+1 Proxmox, it's a very good solution, not to mention free.
It allows you to run (LXC) containers alongside VMs and being actually a KVM based product Windows runs very well on it with VirtIO drivers.
You also get other perks, like ZFS, scheduled backups, replication, fierwalling, API, cloud-init userdata and so on which are either expensive on other products, clunky or not available at all.
