delay in loading pages (hosted on RS servers)

Hi all. I am looking to get a dedicated server and have read lots of posts on these forums.

My one reservation about my top choice, Rackshack, is that, for me, in NYC, there is a ~3 second delay in loading all pages of sites hosted on RS (including these forums). To be more simple: aftern entering the URL and pressing <enter> there is always a pause before the page loads.

Is there something I am missing? Has anyone else noticed this? (I don't notice this on any other sites, have a cable modem connection, and a Mac 800Mhz running OSX.2).

When I ping them the average repsonse time is ~50ms (which is not that bad, considering I'm in NYC).

Thoughts?
Thanks!

ps. if you have (or know) a site hosted by RS, could you post a link to it here, so I can test out the page-load times?
thanks again

Hmm, weird. Anyway if you are interested in a speedtest try http://magentadns.com/testfile.zip

As for your problem: if possible try to connect to the internet using another ISP and see if you experience the same problem.

And remember, it is not that important how fast the sites load for you rather how fast they load for your visitors

Are they all using RS dns servers (the ones you tried) as it could be slow DNS resolution from your ISPs DNS to RS DNS.

Happens quite a bit with my own ISP. They have 4 pairs of DNS servers and one they don't publish unless you ask them. If you set your DNS to that 'hidden' one it's blisteringly fast, if you set it to one of the other 4 pairs, DNS resolution is slow.

Well my sites run their own DNS, so if it doesn't happen on mine (they are all RS hosted), then it is their DNS servers causing the problems

hello

when I type in amusive.com and hit enter:

I see a blank white screen for ~4 seconds

then the page loads almost all at once

when I downloaded the test .zip, I get great speed (~180k/sec)

the next thing to do is to try if from other connections, though I have Time Warner Cable, and I wonder is all TWC (at least in NYC) connection have the same glitch

also, what is this "hidden" DNS you speak of, that is "blazingly fast"?

thanks for the help so far,
Rokali

ps. I have tried this in all browsers, with the same result (including Netscape, IE5, Camino, and Safari)

Ah...

I used to similarly get bad dns resolution speeds with the cable modem I have at home - I started using a local linux server for DNS resolution - way faster even though it technically is 'bad' (uses more resources, etc)

The 'hidden' nameserver is likely the master nameserver of the cluster, and isn't one that is published. A lot of ISP's have them, but there's no specific one that is the hard/fast rule for your provider. Call them and ask and see what they say.

I've noticed the same problem with a couple Rackshack machines I have (non-Cogent) and it's starting to get annoying but I guess you get what you pay for.

This doesnt happen on any other sites? The only thing I thought of was maybe your browser is waiting for the site to load before showing it (which is why they is a pause then it all comes at once)... but if it doesnt happen on other sites you can rule it out....

no, this doesn't happen on any other sites, and my browser is set to display content as it loads (not all at once)

I have several sites on ezzi.net and they load without the delay

any other ideas as to the cause of this? anyone noticed this?

If you load the sites by IP are they still slow to load. If they are then it will rule out a DNS issue

I have noticed the delay on MAC computer only on RS hosted sites too.

I dont even bother using the mac to visit wht anymore. It does not effect any other site either.

Strange indeed.

Regards
Phillip

Maybe RS has an anti-mac policy?

Try www.raymonc.net...

Another thing you can try is another browser.
