Alternative for the RAQ550?
Hi,
I posted this message in the dedicated forum, but no one replied. Can anyone here help me out?
Hello,
I am hosting now 150 sites on a RAQ550. I can use the controlpanel perfectly, but unfortunately, for the PHP I have a service contract with de ISP (I am a newbie).
Now have heard that Sun will stop with the COBALT-series and I have the following questions:
1) Is it still wise to order another RAQ550 as second server (because I have good experience with it) or should I switch to another type, which I do not know very well?
2) If I choose for the RAQ550, can I be certain I will keep on receiving those automatic server-updates/patches from Sun for the commin 2 years or so?
3) What is the alternative if I want the following:
- Raid1/mirroring
- perfect server control panel (I should be able to setup virtual hostings, generate statistics, reboot server from controlpanel, install pkg-software via the controlpanel, etc). In short, I should be able to do everything via the controlpanel.
Thanks a lot for any answer!

I image there will be some support for a year or two even after an official discontinuance of RAQ. There are a vast number of those machines out there and Sun really would prefer their owners migrate to their new lines so they aren't likely to just cut them off cold so I'd guess you'd be safe with at least a year of support after any dicsontinuance notice. Contingency planning never hurts though.
A high end Celeron or low end P4/AMD with raided drives would provide equivalent or better performance. There is no such thing as a perfect control panel and the best thing I could recommend is that you go to the various cp sites and try out their demos till you find one that suits you.

suggest migrating from like
Has the 550 end of life notification gone out?
Typically, SUN provides support for 1-2 years after the end of life notifications. The support is limited to security and bug fixes only.
I have been urging my clients to look at alternatives to the Raq platform due to the uncertain future of the raq product line.
I find Ensim to be an easy migration in terms of management but there is no direct raq to ensim migration tool. (If there is, please let me know).
I find Plesk and CPANEL to be very different in terms of how the server is managed.

Ensim Pro Services has a script for RaQ to Ensim migrations, it's $149 for the assistance with the first migration then you can continue to use the script for additional moves.

Do you mind sharing your experience with the move script? What exactly gets moved(email accounts, files...etc)?
Thanks for your time,
Mike

The Blue Quartz project is keeping the raq 550 contol panel alive. However, I think you will find deploying Plesk, Cpanel, DirectAdmin, Ensim, or CP+ on a system will give you as much as possibly more than the raq GUI and its derivatives.
For any control panel, make sure your are not tied to specific hardware and that the underlying OS can largely be updated independent of the control panel. The latter is a major issue with some GUIs as they force you to run outdated, insecure software.

you might have a hard time getting hardware replacements through Sun. i am not confident that everyone at Sun is on the same page with regards to supporting cobalt past EOL. nor do i know if there is an official number for just Cobalt line. the old number no longer works.
www.depopo.net offers some useful info with continuing the RaQ550 alive through the Ruby Project (modification of the Blue Quartz using RH 9).
i believe there is a way to make the CMUTools for migrating RaQ550 to Blue Quartz work, but i cannot find the link.

i've been looking around for a solution to this also
i've run bluequartz quite successfully though it (just like the raq550) has it's bugs and does require a bit of tech know how.
i'm currently working on using bluepanel (bluepanel.org) ontop of bluequartz.
ensim, plesk, directadmin are all good WHM's if you can aford them.

Hi, It might be worth your while going to http://www.efinityforum.co.uk/ and asking any questions you have etc. As the Efinity offers a more of a solution then just a control panel, you get the hardware aswell ( Its more of a RaQ Clone but with the bugs taken out etc.

1. http://www.netsolid.net/ - former Sun Cobalt employees. Will offer both the hardware and software... Almost done (As of Oct 04') and are Slow in progress :-( - Cobalt Sales and Engineering, Redhat Engineers, and Members of Sun are involved. Call for feedback... I had no luck emailing. Per Dan - They receive 1000's of emails
2. www.bluequartz.org - Cobalt User Group. Offers just the software. Download for free there or buy it for a few bucks on a CD here ... Also - I have seen systems with BQ on ebay.
http://search.ebay.com/cobalt-softwa...categoryZ58058
3. Ensim / Cpanel. Easy to use GUI's - Get excellent support from www.ev1.com
4. Sun Clone - Not too sure about these guys however check them out at. http://www.ipdevel.ro/project_detail.php?p=38
Others listed I have not seen yet - Will check them out!!!!
