Question

Hi,
I have a dedicated redhat 6.2 server with apache 1.3.12 and the newest fp 2000 extensions. I saw plesk gives away a 1 domain version for free (just have 1 domain) and I wanted to use plesk to administer the server since I can't seem to get sendmail to work right and the server does some wierd things. Can I safely install plesk on the server (docs on website said to start with clean server) without any huge problems? Naturally I will backup the data. Has anyone had any experiences with plesk? Is it a good software package?

Thanks!!!

Exclamation

Well I am concerned that it might take the server down. I only have one server to play with and if it screws everything up then it could take some time for me to figure out how to fix it...

Lightbulb Possibly

The staff suggest a clean install of the OS without any web server, Mta (smtp), ftp, etc... as it might conflict with the Plesk installation. Plesk apparently automatically installs these for you (probably fetches latest versions) and gets you setup.

BTW, Plesk install Qmail which is more secure than Sendmail.

it must be clean

Yes, the server must be clean and properly partitioned.
It will install Apache, proftpd, qmail, fp ext and mysql then.

So if you have any further questions, please lemme know

cheers,
mirco

Hello,

It does not have to be a clean install... I have installed in many times on Dialtone's servers that have been customized. You just need to stop Sendmail, Named, MySQL, httpd and httpsd.

The only thing to remember is that it will install everything on the /usr partition. If all your space is on home just create a symbolic link to your home directory (I believe /usr/local/plesk is where it installs to) before you install Plesk and it will install it on your home directory. I have told Plesk support how to do this so they should be able to help you out.

Scott

Cool i am also buying it

Hello guys,

I am also considering installing Plesk and give it a try in my new server, since it seem to be perfect in terms of price and features that I need.

Can someone tell me as what instruction shall I give my colocation provider while installing the OS ? Since I am remotely located, I cannot go there and install this software up there.

Or I let them install RedHat 6.2 and then I install Plesk by myself ? In that case shall I uninstall these softwares - Apache, Sendmail etc ?

A bit detailed help, would save me few days ! if anyone have any previous experience in doing such thing.

Also does it get affected if I install more softwares later on ?

I would give your provider a set of instructions. And if possible have them install Plesk.

Lightbulb thats great !

Hey this is great. I really appriciate this.

However if you email me currently, I am not able to recieve (dunno whats the problem with Hotmail ). Can you email me more details to eemar@bath.ac.uk if possible.

My new server will go live on 1st October. He will probably install the softwares around 20th or so.

Thanx again You solved a major problem for me.
