The last VW Beetle rolls off the line

Link to Yahoo News on VW Beetle

I love Beetles. They are not anything special mechanically, but somehow they mean something special to people across time, space and cultural barriers, defining a time many of us will never forget.

Growing up on the beaches of San Diego many of my friends had Beetles or Gias or Fastbacks. Nothing like taking one of those babies to Ensenada, Mexico for the weekend and keeping our fingers crossed we would get home!

They were pretty reliable and the nice thing was if they did break down, anyone could just about take the car apart and put it back together with a basic toolkit.

I hate the shape of the new beetle, but the old beetle was quite nice.

the best thing about the beetle was the air-cooled engines....was as simple as an old motorcycle engine...large diameter wheels was a big plus too [in comparison the small wheels of small jap cars make the ride very bumpy and the car unstable in high speeds ]......shape is nice......but i like the new one more....when i see a neighbours blood red new one it drives me mad lol

When I was very young (4-5 years old) my parents had a red one with flower patterned upholstery. What is funny about that is the year was 1969-1970 and my father was an officer in the U.S. Army and used to drive it on base. Flower power meets the establishment right in my own home.

The new Beetles are nice, but that's not the point. I wonder if the old style is in fact the longest running production car in the world. I can't think of another model that has been made for 70 years.

I had 3 of them as a young teenager ('63, '67, '69) My cousins and I would pound them mercilessly in the large field near my grandfathers house. They could take a beating and just keep going.... Many beetles wound up being the chassis for dune buggies and other off highway vehicles because their suspension design was so rugged.

Yup, sorry to see them go. My first car was a 67 bug. Had lots of fun with that thing. Very rugged. Continued on serving me even after I rolled it. Ahh, to be young again.
