hardware people - installing ram (Please Help!)
I bought a Dell Dimension 2400 that came with 128 Megs of SD RAM. I wanted to upgrade it so I bought 512 Megs of Crucial (company name) DDR Ram. I opened up the computer and found where it is supposed to go. I don't plan on touching the 128 stick, I was just going to put the 512 along side of it. I opened the clips and put it in with the long side that had the cutout face down. The two short sides both have two cutouts. I clipped it in using the lower cutouts, hooked the computer back up, booted it and it said that there were only 128 megs of total ram under the system information. So I opened the computer back up. I can clip the upper cutout in on one side easily, but to do it on the other side seems like it will require a good amount of force. So, before braking the memory stick or my new computer I figured I would ask you guys. What should I do?

You two ram cards may not be compatable. Try removing the 128 card and install the 512 one. They sometimes need to be "caressed" into the slot but don't use excessive force.

Ok, well I figured out why I was able to snap in one side and not the other. I didn't know the cutout on the bottom was off center, so I switched it so it was no longer backwards. I also took the 128 and snapped it using the bottom two cutouts on the sides. I assume this is a method of storage. My problem right now is I just can't snap in the 512. The arms hit the stick right between the two cutouts on the sides. I know the sticks aren't the problem though because I encountered the same problem when I tried to re-install the 128 so I wouldn't have to be using my old computer to type this message.
As a side note at one point I thought I had it figured out. So I plugged everything in and went to boot the computer.. all of the lights on the computer started flashing and the computer started rapidly beeping. I assume this was the computer telling me that there was no RAM so it couldn't do anything.

That is the computer telling you that the ram is not installed properly or that it is incompatable.

Just so you know, you CANNOT MIX BOTH SD RAM and DDR RAM within the same system.
The motherboard has to be able to support DDR RAM in order for it to function properly, otherwise, you risk damaging your system.

Got it! Turns out they were compatible. I thought they were going to snap in evenly but apparently one side needs to be snapped in (which props the other side up), then the other side has to be forcibly pushed down and snapped in.
I'm actually getting closer to having a decent computer..
80gig hd
128meg usb keychain hd
640mb ram
Pentium 4 2.2 GHz
wireless optical mouse
I know it doesn't sound impressive but this is coming from..
40gig hd
Celeron 1.2 GHz
128 MB Ram
..which I got last November, but for 4yrs. before that I had
Pentium 2 66 MHz (I think that was the speed)
2gig HD
33 MB Ram (I think)
Now I guess I should start paying off Dell before I blow all my money on upgrades.

How in god's name did you get DDR to work with SD RAM? They have different slots, different specifications, and they look different. WTF?

So they work fine now, but if I keep it this way then I'm risking damaging the mother board?

If it makes a difference I re-checked the invoice and the ram that it came with isn't sd ram, it is ddr sd ram. The new ram is definetly just ddr though.

Ahh nevermind, you misdescribed your system.
The Dell Dismension 2400 comes with 128mb of DDR SDRAM. I'm glad it worked out for you.

There's mb with SIS chipset that support both SDR and DDR (Not at the same time though...)
