How is the power of this Server?

Hello everyone. At first, if i create a thread in other Category, please move it to correct one.
I want to know how good is this server for webhosting:
1U Supermicro 2x Intel Xeon E5-2650 Eight Core 192GB RAM
So two E5-2650 and 192GB Ram
I know nobody can tell me how many websites can it to host, but is a reliable to start with it?
So we say a just Info blog, with less than 200visitor per month, How many such Blogs can it hosts?
Or we say a Big sites with over 5,000 visitors ....

What is most important for hosting? CPU or Ram?
Are 2x E5-2650 and 192GB RAM good combines?

For a single website and 5k visitors? That's over kill by far. For a single shared account even at 200 visitors or even 5k a hefty shared package should be enough.

If you're looking to turn that into a shared box to sell web hosting. Then the amount of RAM is way too much. There is a certain performance to price point you have to figure out. I suggest start with 32GB of RAM and if you need more you can always add to it.

If you're looking to turn it into a VPS server then the RAM and CPU is great, just worry about disk at that point.

Honestly, it does not take that much ram or processing power to host. 99% of hosts run out of disk space and bandwidth before ever worring about ram or processing power. What is more important is your network and Hard Drive.

You maybe be even better served by a lower core count and higher mhz.
As stated above 16/32GB Ram is a good start and focus on RAID array. If you want to avoid bottleneck try to grab at least a 4xSSDs for a fast RAID10 setup.

Agree with MightWeb-Greg as that's overkill to the max. How did you come up with those numbers?

Depends on what kind of sites, are you talking just a text only blog, or a CMS based blog? A DB driven website would require SSD and a fast CPU, anything less, can run on less. The server specs seam way overkill for a web hosting starter, it'll take you a long while to fill that up.

I agree, I have a similar setup on a colocation in dallas texas, and even with the 200 clients or so we have we barely hit anything on cpu%. These servers scream thats for sure, lol.

5k of visitor is per day or per hour? If that is per day, a good shared hosting is sufficient for your site. If that is per hour, a VPS with 2 core/2-3GB RAM would be enough, assuming your sites are well-optimized. Dedicated server would be more suitable for large company with thousands of customers.

Maybe you start with Intel Xeon E3-8 Logical cores with max of 32GB Ram to start? Or E3-12xxV5 which supports up to 64GB DDR Ram?

Does your server really need 192 GB RAM for a single website ? Stop wasting money for useless things. Go for 32GB RAM. E5-2650 is a great processor. Power consumption is not bad.

Sorry for interrupting. Actually, OP wanted to Start that configuration and needs info about "How many Sites OP could host with this"

It means, OP wanted to host multi sites, of course.

Anyway HOSTHONEY, I agree with you as well because Such big config is just waste of Money & resource.

If it is for web hosting, get it then setup some VPS for you to resell :-)

Just make sure to go for SSD ( raid10 setup ).
