What are the steps?
What are the steps I would need to take to make my own server for my personal use, just for my own website, and no one else's?
What programs would I need, etc.
Any help is appreciated, but I am new to this and would like to know.
Thanks,
Rafeed

If you just want a plain local web server for HTML you could try www.apache.org. If you need PHP and MySQL too, try www.firepages.com.au (assuming you're using Windows)
If not, what are you trying to do?

If you want to host it off of your own PC, you should be aware of a number of things: Your ISP will likely not allow it. Your machine and line can likely not handle the bandwidth, etc. needed. If you don't care if your site is down when your power, cable, etc. is then you could try this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...09726792944000
BUT... I'm not sure I would trust anything the book has to say.
From the back cover:
"Web Server Software that runs on everything from Windows 3.1 up to Windows NT and XP. This software runs in the "background" of Windows and takes up so little RAM that you won't even realize it's running. You continue to use your PC as you normally would while your web site is being made available to the world from your very own computer. "
From the publisher:
"Web Hosting used to be the world's best kept secret known only to mysterious web hosting companies who could charge whatever the market would bear to the unsuspecting webmaster. Ken Joy's book and accompanying CD-ROM takes the mystery out of web hosting and puts it in reach of the average person with a PC and an internet connection. This will be the product that web hosting companies won't want existing and future webmaster's to know about. Do-it-yourself web hosting is now a reality with The Complete Web Hosting Kit. The Complete Web Hosting Kit also allows you to become your own web hosting company and host sites for other people on your home PC!"
From the author:
"I used to pay $40 a month for web hosting. When I decided to get into the web hosting business, I was paying nearly $250 a month to a provider simply for the space and connection to host sites. I figured, if they can do it, there's got to be a way that I can do it to. Hundreds of hours of research and trial and error helped me produce The Complete Web Hosting Kit for people, like me, who wanted to host and be in control of their own sites without having to pay monthly fees. Now, people buy the kit not only to host their own sites, but to start their own web hosting businesses and host other people's sites! "
Frankly, the author is an idiot.

I have a cable internet connection.
I want to be able to use php, java, mysql, asp, etc.
I want to make it run from my own pc on the internet.
for example, I would use my own ip address for my site.
I don't want to do hosting. If I wanted to do that, I would have my own dedicated server.
Any help is good, thanks guys

Is this a seperate computer? Because you are referring to it as a "server." Either way - that will do fine.
Depending what you put on the web, and how many people visit your site will change how much bandwidth you use.

No, sorry, it's not a "server" I guess since it's not a separate computer.
so where do I go and what/where do I get the programs to install?
After I install all the php, etc, how do I make it so that whoever types in my IP can get in?

There is a program called FoxServ which will install all of it for you. I've never used it though, so I couldn't advise you on it. Perhaps someone here can.

I don't know about that... He may be full o' BS! But he found a publisher, and is getting his share of $39.95/copy. I'm sure he'll make his million in short order... Doesn't seem like an idiot's plan to me!
