1&1 Internet - Win 2003 Professional Problems
Has anyone had experience with the Windows 2003 Professional account at 1&1? Perhaps your getting the same problems as me.
Ever since I signed up a couple of weeks ago my site has been constantly going down with "Service Unavailable" errors. The most recent is happening at the moment and judging upon their previous experience wont be fixed until Monday making it 3 Days this time
This is the 5th time (that i know of) that I've had these problems. They always conveniently happen at the weekend aswell and I cant get through to their support to fix it. I think this is a terrible service especially when they "Guarantee" 99.9% Uptime.
Anyone else having this problem? What other UK based ASP hosts are there that are reputable and within the price range of £15-£20 a month with 35-40GB of bandwidth a month?
Cheers

Contact them about it firstly. Secondly, you say that websites are unavailable, you should try connecting via other means (remote desktop or whatever is equivelant to SSH). If you can ping/connect to it in other ways then the chances are it's nothing to do with 1&1, merely a software error.
Do you have a dedicated server or just a hosting account?

Its a hosting account, I have contacted them over the phone and email and both times they said to contact them when it happens again. Not very useful when it happens out of office hours.
FTP is accessible, my database (.mdb) isnt downloadable for some reason but everything else is. The error is displayed when going to the site http://www.codenamevice.co.uk (not really advertising when their aint **** to see )

Well, it's not a server problem as pinging them is fine. I have seen this happen before, but can't quite recall why it would do this. (Not much use!) I have heard a lot of negative feedback for 1&1 lately but see how you get in in a couple of weeks.
If they have a 99% uptime gaurantee, you should contact them about this.

Hi,
My site is down yet again for the 5th time (that I know of) since I signed up with you just a couple of weeks ago. I’m on the professional ASP hosting package and I’m getting “Service Unavailable” errors all the time and its getting excessively annoying.
You claim to guarantee 99.9% uptime so why isn’t this “guarantee” being met? Last time I was told to just email when the problem comes up but I want to know why its happening and if it is going to stop otherwise I’ll have to move somewhere more reliable.

Many Thanks

Do a search on Google for that error message and you'll have some ammunition to throw at them when corresponding.
In most cases the reason that message appears is that your site has gone down many times in succession (due to bad code, infinite loops etc.) and after a predetermined number of tries IIS stops restarting the site and expects you to go in there and sort out the code.
In a shared hosting environment it could be your code or that of any other site sharing the same web application (likely all the sites on the server).
Basically they have a bad script running on your box - either your site or someone elses which they SHOULD be tracking down and sorting out. Ask them to move you to another box and see if the problem stops - if it doesn't it's probably your code

Well I have problems with accessing the mdb database because of file in use errors (had to make a script to loop until it was opened) but I shouldn't have to do that because my site worked fine in terms of that on my last host.
The problems were happening before I put in the loop and it cuts out after 5 seconds if it hasnt connected.

check that 99.9, on some firms they offer for servers some network.
<crap>.
many people will quote the famous "network uptime" but will not offer out on the servers themselves.
so look into that aspect of the contract.

I got a reply off the tech support guy,

This may be because of the popularity of the site, your scripts are exceeding the usage limits for your package. The only way to get round this is by moving to a dedicated server.
|
However I've emailed them back because they say there is no limit upon the number of hits a site can receive and so there servers should not cut out if this is one of their selling points.

Well script wise I think I may have found the problem. A page on the site downloads.asp has been called around 70,000 this month (July) so far but the bad thing was it had around 40+ SQL queries being called from it if not more because the whole system was started when I was in my ASP prime
This has now been reduced to a measly 4 so hopefully everything will be good and dandy. I've also removed countless other SQL queries that can be carried out by manually processing all the data so that should help aswell.
If everything goes well then I'll report back because apart from this problem they have been an excellent host for the price of just £19.99 a month.
