I see a lot of hosting companies offer unlimited space (and/or transfer). The only way I can imagine that a host can actually provide this is to have an unlimited hard-drive, right? The nicest thing about this is that they would only need one drive for all their servers! (since it IS unlimited space)
I would like to know where you buy one of these, they must be cheap since the offers are usually low priced. Any help locating one of these would be appreciated. Thanks!

Let me give my two cents. Companies that offer unlimited disk space and unlimited transfer for less than $50 a month is outrageous. It's impossible.

I work for a company called JTAN. Unlimited disk space is offered. How do we offer unlimited disk space? It's quite simple. We do not offer unlimited data transfer. We offer 10GBs of transfer a month for our ProWeb account. After those 10GBs, the data that has been transfered checks out with hardrive space. So if in the event someone was to upload 15GB, it doesn't hurt us at all. Transfer fees pay for the hardrive space.

That's how JTAN does it. It checks out. You upload 20GBs of files, and yeah, we'll be glad to host those 20GB. But that's 10GB over the free data transfer limit. So technically, those extra 10GB of bandwidth that you put in is paying for that extra 20GB of space.

See what I mean? I have no idea how companies who offer unlimited disk space and transfer do it. It's impossible, like you said.

So that means I can do a backup of all my servers (about 80gb) every year to your servers and only pay for the extra bandwidth when used once a year?

No,no, just backup the 10 gig per month for 8 months and then you pay NO bandwidth and get 80 gig storage at NO extra charge!

Is it not going a bit far when we are trying to exploit offers, I can see how unmetered space with restricted bandwidth works for 99.99% of users.

Well they shouldnt offer it in my opinion or else they are asking to be exploited! I think its a bad idea anyway, ok fine the user winds up paying for the bandwidth and they use the money for disk space, where do they get the $$ to pay for the bandwidth that is used? If they divert their funds to disk space who pays the lines? If they do then I dont see this happening long becuase I know a few references that would take advantage of their offer and it would probably cripple them to pay for 1.5 tbps and store 1.5 terabytes.

Let me start tarring my files now, oh I forgot to tell you i'd be untarring them after i moved, so a 10gb tar file will untar to 25+ gb!

I still can't find anything wrong with it.

Supermarkets in the UK have a stack of carrier bags at the end of the checkout, they're free but people don't take 10,000 for the sake of it or for their own business, it's a type of respect I guess.

I bet there a thousands of examples of such too, basically the guy is flexible on space and I can't see a normal web user having a problem with it.

Admin, the point of it all is the word unlimited is a lie!. I could make a load of money by selling the new maxtor 80gb drives as "unlimited" hard drives. But once they hit 80gb it no longer becomes unlimited.

The fact of it is that its a lie and their gunna be having to add a lot of drives to their servers to keep up with my load if i decide to go through with it, vdi even agreed to donate their httpd logs to my cause so i can have a nice big gzip'd tarball to send over, text compresses much better than binary code does .

The fact that unlimited doesn't exist is a plain flat out lie, if they want to give each person 10gb then advertise 10gb not a lie.

Considering their on a "yearly" payment plan it appears i'll wait till I actually want to waste 260 dollars to backup and un-zip/tar my files , i guarountee my first tar's gunna fill a good bit of their hd up, then 30 days later yet another will be on its way.

You are more than welcome to fill up 10GB a month and not pay for bandwidth. JTAN offers unlimited disk space.

In my eyes, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space cannot be done. But one can be done without the other. E.g. if you offer 100 megs of bandwidth a month, there's a limit to the space there unless you want to pay extra for the bandwidth.

All we ask is that you tell us first if you are about to upload 50GB, so we can make sure there is enough space. We actually barely have any users that use over a GB. But that doesn't matter. As Admin said, it's a respect to the customer we are giving. Not setting a limit. We expect the customers to respect us back, but you can really upload 10GB a month. Really.

Considering I finally found your TOS let me quote it.

"Unlimited means "no fixed limits for personal interactive use". It does NOT mean there are no limits. Normal use by single individuals is OK. When in doubt, ask. We're VERY reasonable, but if you really want a dedicated server, it can be arranged for a price that is fair to both of us.

Similarly, unlimited disk space is also limited by an implicit sense of reasonableness. If you have more than a few hundred megs, we will ask if we can move your files to another disk that isn't backed up daily. "


That is a VERY VERY VERY WRONG Definition of the Word Unlimited. Allow me to quote it again.

Now Websters New World Collage Dictionary states this about the word unlimited!

unlimited (adj.) without limits or restrictions, lacking boundaries, vast, illimitable
