Free SSL

Hey, I was just skimming through news on the net and saw that GeoTrust is offering free SSL. Here are the details that I found:

GeoTrust and USERTrust Launch Free SSL Service
Free Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Protects Private Information from Interception on the Internet
and lowers the barrier of entry to companies doing business online

What?
A partnership between GeoTrust Inc. and USERTrust offers Free SSL certificates (www.freessl.com), to companies in the e-marketplace and places more value on site authenticity. Web server certificates allow consumers and Web sites to conduct safe e-commerce transactions with an encrypted SSL connection. With FreeSSL, businesses receive a trusted USERTrust Web server certificate that is compatible with 70% of the current Web browsers (Internet Explorer™ 5.01 and higher).

Who?
GeoTrust Inc., (www.geotrust.com), solving the problem of identity, authenticity and risk assessment in online business, and USERTrust (www.usertrust.com), a governmentally licensed certification authority (CA) and trusted third party that generates SSL’s certificates to companies and individuals conducting business on the Web.

How?
Businesses interested in obtaining a free SSL certificate, can do so three ways; by signing-up at www.FreeSSL.com, ordering GeoTrust’s True Site™ service or registering with a domain hosting company that is licensing the True Site technology. The service is available without charge for the first year. Upon renewal, FreeSSL customers will be charged a small fee.

Why?
By providing FreeSSL certificates, GeoTrust is making it possible for many companies to conduct transactions online. SSL certificates can cost as much as $350. With FreeSSL, businesses can assure their customers that transactions and information are secure on the Internet without having to unreasonable prices.

What is SSL?
SSL protocol is the Web standard for encrypting communications between users and e-commerce sites. Support for SSL is a standard built into all major browsers. Data sent over an SSL connection is protected by encryption, a mechanism that prevents eavesdropping and tampering for any transmitted data.

When?
Right now.

What is True Site?
True Site is an identity solution for business Web sites, providing identification information to consumers, ensuring a site’s legitimacy and making e-commerce safer.

Domain Hosting companies now licensing True Site include:
Hit Sites (www.hitsites.com), InfoDial (www.infodial.net), Lynch2 (www.lynch2.com), MGA Web Productions (www.mgaweb.com), West Coast Internet Service Provider (www.WCISP.com), Webtransitions.com (www.webtransitions.com), Net Fronts Inc.(www.netfronts.com), Registrant Applicant (www.reg.ca), TeamMediaOnline.com (www.teammediaonlin.com), WebSiteMonster.com (www.websitemonster.com).

About GeoTrust
Delivering safe on-line transactions for e-commerce is GeoTrust's sole focus. The company works with service providers, buyers, sellers, and Web-based trading environments to establish business identities, manage representatives' permission levels, and remove risks from on-line transactions.
