I don't have a suggestion for you. Just a reminder to anyone reading that the thread starter is looking for suggestions. This isn't the place to be offering your services.

I'll also chime in since I am looking for colo services. (See my request in Web Hosting Requests.)

Why does it cost more to colo my server than to get a dedicated server from someone. I have my box ready to go so all you do is unpack it and plug it in and I manage the rest.

Any colo providers care to comment?

It depends on the amount of bandwidth you actually purchase, most places have agreements where they pay a bulk price for x amount of servers, colo'ing only 1 server or 4U of space isnt gonna get you a decent price.

Try these for premium cost + bandwidth

Another thing to keep in mind is in the dedicated server market, people get sold machines with 1Mbit of bandwidth for $99, which sounds great, but in reality most of them may only use 10-15GB of bandwidth.

In a colocation situation things are different. If a customer asks specifically for 1Mbit of bandwidth he will most likely use it, so you can not "Oversell" colocation to the extent you can Dedicated Servers or Shared hosting.

Another thing I need to mention is that there is a great variance in the bandwidth that colocation providers use as well, and this will make an impact even within the same "market".

I hope this helps....

Colocation makes more sense when you have several servers and/or those servers are higher end (which wouldn't be prudent to rent)

It's a matter of volume, it costs more to colocate 1 server, in my experience around 8 servers the curve starts to favor colocation, and in our case with 48 servers it's a fair bit cheaper to colocate than get dedicated and that's even compared to Rackshack dedicateds. Though we do have about 8 rackshacks and 40 colocated we pay a good bit less for the colocated servers, it runs us about $60 per month per server to colocate them. If those were all Rackshacks even at $99 (106) per server we'd be paying more for dedicateds.

I'd say it depends on how many mbps you buy. If you're on 1-5mbit, probably not to be profitable. On 10-100mbit, maybe. Its all about burst, you have to be able to handle bursting.

We don't charge more to colo than for a managed server, however, one reason I can say would justify a higher cost is challenges and problems created by customers.

For example, we have hundreds of managed Windows servers. During Code Red and Slammer, we did not have one single server affected because we are diligent about keeping our boxes updated and patched. We did have colo boxes that were affected which can affect our entire network.

We have done what we can to separate the two and limit risk of problems to all customers, however, one poorly managed box can cause huge problems on a network. Boxes not locked down, open relays, unsecure allowing hacks, etc are all good reasons.

Ok, to keep your costs down ... put the servers into rackmount cases A tower takes up too much room @ a DC compared to *probaly* fitting all that kit into a 1u or 2u box.

BEST for collocation - no such thing, there can only be best for you based on circumstances and requirements - pick somewhere with a good rep, decent b/w suppliers, ease of access to you kit in case you need it, reliable/trained staff in case you require remote-intelligent hands ... the list can go on ...

Consider a reboot switch, rather than having to request reboots.

You might need 100Gb of TRANSFER, i doubt you 'd need that much bandwidth. 100Gb DT is appx 3.5Mb/s so you'd bee looking to but 4Mb/s to cover a bit of overuse. Burstable is good as long as you dont mind a shock occasionaly, rate-limited can help the budget
