Spotted this today. It was posted by a WHMCS staff member. I can't find any official posts about it yet however.

Looking forward to seeing if anything breaks or gets accidentally overwritten.
Love the concept, but historically updates have introduced problems. Automatic updating in this instance is worrisome (way more important than forum software), so we're staying cautious.Your one stop shop for decentralization

I haven't had problems with updates, myself, but if you use third party addon she, yeah, you may just notice problems.
Given the bug riddled mess that their 'stable' versions entail, I'd stay as far away from a 'beta' as possibleTom Whiting, WHMCS Guru extraordinaire

Love the news about that auto update. Been missing that all they way since we started to use WHMCS back in 2009 :-) I guess they have done a lot of back-end work, so the new function list is not that long.
Looking forward to test WHMCS7.

I can't argue with their release of the #1 requested feature on requests.whmcs.com (automatic update utility). Personally I'm hoping for an official Stripe (JS) module and various EU invoicing improvements (primarily credit notes). I feel like they're somewhat struggling to modernise the software while shipping new features, I'd imagine lots of time is going towards modernisation currently... in the long run this may not be a bad idea as it does need to be done.

Yikes, the #1 requested feature? Gah, this is only going to end up causing problems, I can tell this now..

I do have to wonder why a product aimed at web hosting providers needs an automatic update utility so badly.... I can sort of see the whole "saving time" point of view but honestly it shouldn't take that much time unless core files have been fiddled with (in which case an automatic update utility isn't going to be very useful). As a customer I would prefer the developer's time to be spent elsewhere but again, I can't argue with their business choice to deliver the most requested feature... unless it ends up causing problems like you say in which case I guess it would be a bad business decision! Time will tell

Atleast its not forced updates like windows 10. If I understand what john wrote over in their forums. It looks like it works more similar to old way windows worked. It notify you of an update and you have to click rather you want to update or not.
((WHMCS Auto Updater - In WHMCS 7.0, updates are just a click away. A subtle new update notification will let you know whenever an update is available, wherever you are in the admin area, and when clicked will take you to the all new Automatic Update interface that lets you update WHMCS without ever leaving the WHMCS admin interface.))
Regardless, it is a new form of updating that even out of the beta stage, I would highly recommend people make a backup of their full WHMCS before clicking update so if it breaks anything you can revert back.

Well it looks like (at least in my environment), automatic updates are a bust
Attempt 1 - started 7:05 25 minutes, no Update
Kind of funny really. Release the update only via automatic update, which tells you 'don't close the window', and then just doesn't workTom Whiting, WHMCS Guru extraordinaire

LOL, wasn't expecting it to be , but I do expect things to be at least somewhat tested by staff so that these things don't pop up.

Can anyone confirm if the auto-update nasty works by requiring old school FTP (albeit even if localhost)? I've little confidence that this isn't going to cause major issues down the road, but at least it masks their ability (or lack of) to do immutable releases. I give up facepalming about the trio of tripe nowadays and just count the days to the next #fail
Anyone serious about their billing system (and the data it holds) and even the slightest understanding of what devops is will surely disable auto-update, maybe it's intended for summer hosts.
which tells you 'don't close the window'
I retract what I said early, I'm facepalming a lot, tell me that this update happens async in some background worker and this doesn't happen on the request pipeline? #failLast edited by MattF; 08-05-2016 at 10:33 PM.

I'd never trust auto-update. If you have any sort of customizations, you'll want to compare and merge the code, review it on a dev instance that mirrors your production data & server, and then deploy it
I'm not sure that can be done with WHMCS' encoded code, but something to think about before using this.
Kinda off topic, but didn't Hostbill have an auto-update feature that got exploited and caused a mess? I can't remember 100% what that was about, but i remember auto-update being the cause of it

Wait, what? Is that only for beta, or for stable releases too?
