How do you backup your dedicated server for disaster recovery?

I've always been at odds with this - I run rsync to backup data, but no matter what if the server crashed I have to do a whole control panel and OS re-install, then manually create accounts etc and it becomes a nightmare.

How do you manage making sure that everything is backed up and that you can do a very efficient disaster recovery if needed?

Backup databases every day. For static files - once a week. Files are copied to the remote server for FTP, SSH.

And how would a restoration then be done? Manually? Do you use the built in backup functions of WHM, for example?

Well if you use the built in backup functions you can just transfer back all the files and you can restore them by WHM.

R1Soft! This gives you incremental backups of your files and databases. Make sure your backups are stored offsite.

Another vote for R1Soft, however I'd also use at least one alternative backup strategy rather than relying on a single piece of software (you should be testing backup recovery too of course).

If there is any control panel in your server, you should take account backups from there which will make restore easier. In addition to that you should go for R1soft, which will take server snapshots and help you with the restore in a better way.

I think R1Soft has a bare metal restore feature, you might want to check that out.

I have been using cPanel's own backup feature for more than 2 years already. No issues so far.

I have used bare metal restore once with R1Soft running a WHM server. Have to say it went flawlessly and saved my bacon.

Should I pile on here and recommend R1Soft? Remote backups are so important, and I guarantee you, should you face a server failure, you'd be wishing you spent what it took to restore your data.

Actually Disaster recovery is completely different thing as compare to normal server crash, in disaster your server hosted data center impacted, therefore you don't have any alternative for your servers in same data center and at that time your R1Soft backup also won't help you, if its hosted in same data center.

To minimize the server downtime in disaster situation, its always recommended to use R1soft remote backup in another data center as compare to server hosted data center, so that you can easily use R1soft bare metal restoration feature to restore server backup in another data center.

Secondary option is to use inbuilt cPanel backup option and store backup in another data center backup server, so that you can use it to restore hosting accounts in disaster recovery situation

R1Soft is the best option to use for disaster recovery with very detailed controls and the agent barely uses any resources on the machine it's backing up (I am using the E3-1270v2s here; the E5-2620s barely register usage whereas you might hit .80 during backup on the 1270 with 8.0 equal to all cores including hyperthreading cores in use.). Simply set appropriate time resolutions for what you feel comfortable with and it will be able to restore the server if the worst should happen.

It is always best to get R1Soft in a datacenter geographically located elsewhere than where the server you are trying to backup is. For example, we use Seattle as our designated backup point for our hubs in Washington, D.C.

We have always used rsync, it's reliable, simple to use, and fast.
For complex setups in addition to rsync we usually write a bash script to restore accounts, config control panels, etc depending on what's needed.
The OS reinstall is usually inevitable, because when a total loss does occur, which is REALLY rare, the new server usually is a leap forward is hardware so you'll want a clean OS install.

We setup multiple R1Soft servers for both managed and semi-managed clients and I can honestly say +1 to that. Gets the job done. Works for Nightly backups, or for as frequent as the clients want them.

I will echo the R1Soft recommendation that others have made. However, I will add that I would never trust R1Soft as my only set of backups. While R1Soft may still be the best option out there for hosts and in general it works pretty well, it has its faults. For this reason we always maintain full cPanel backups as well. A mix of on and off site backups is also a good idea.

    I use these 3 options:
    1. R1Soft via local network (same DC) for extremely fast backup & recovery (if needed).
    2. R1Soft via public network (to another DC) for disaster recovery (if needed).
    3. Periodically off-site manual backups, because you can never have too many backups.

I'd also like to stress out the fact that you should periodically check on your backups, to make sure they are being done 100% OK, and without any issues or errors. Some backup systems will not warn you about this, and you may think your data is safely backed up, and wake up one unfortunate day when you'll actually need to use those backups, only to find they aren't working properly or they're corrupt/etc.

I've also found that R1Soft database restoring is quite slow, compared to regular .sql restoring, so you can create a local script that'd create daily .sql backups and store them on your server somewhere, even gzip them, and then R1Soft would back those up as files, not as databases... and in the event you'll need to restore those databases quickly you can restore from the .sql files.
