Question

Merchant Account hubbub

I'm considering going the merchant account route (currently I use CCNow) and after researching it I'm more confused than ever!

What must I do to accept credit cards online?

Merchant Account, gateway, software, etc.

Typically what will I be paying per month for this?

It all depends on the company you choose, but you will probably pay a gateway fee, statement fee, virtual terminal lease (if you don't buy the software), a transaction fee of around a quarter each, and then the discount rate, which just means the % of the purchase that they keep. Usually that's around 2-4%. Overall it'll run you around $60 a month or so (not counting the discount rate and transaction fee).

I'm sure there are plenty that charge less out there, but it is so mind numbing it's hard to keep up with!

With most places you're looking at a:
Setup fee(one time), Gateway fee(monthly), Statement fee(monthly), Discount rate, Per transaction fee, Monthly minimum, Chargeback fee, retrieval fee, and I can't think of anything off anything else right now.
All you need is your merchant account, and a bank account, and that be everything you need to charge customers. I recommend the Authorize.net gateway.

That's about what I expected. Thanks for the replies.

Everywhere I looked there were fees and fees and fees upon fees. I just wanted to see if this was the norm.

see propay.com and www.sfcommerce.com

go with propay if you are in the US. its free and is just like a full merchant account.

if you are outside the US e-mail sfcommerce as they offer international accounts and charge $299 setup and 3% commision only.
