Question about re-direct

Hi, I made a small site through a sub-domain of my domain (http://subdomain.mydomain.com).
Now, i want to purchase a new domain name (but keep the site hosted on my sub-domain) and have it re-direct people to the sub-domain.
So, if I purchase this domain name, it HAS to come with some sort of webspace, correct (because I would have to write a re-direct page and host it on the new domain's server)?

Do most hosting companies let you buy names through them? I didn't even check to see if I can purchase one through my current host.
Thanks for any help!

Most domain registrars will let you have a free redirect page. Much cheaper than buying a name+hosting.

Try www.registerfly.com

Not really. I do this all the time with my host. Just register a domain name any where, add it as a mirror (which is free) and point it to that sub-domain in your account. In that way, you'll have 2 domain websites for the cost of just 1. Of course, not every host comes with that. And with a host like that, I've NEVER used those forwarding features that come with registrars.

Thanks! I just registered a name through them.

$9.95 a year is a great price.

Now I just have to figure out how to setiup a re-direct.

Hmmm, I'm not down with all the control panels but you could do it old school by pointing the domain at the IP you want and adding a ServerAlias to your main domain entry in httpd.conf.

ServerAlias whatever.you.need.com

No redirect required. Your host should be able to do this for you.

Unless I misunderstood what you're asking

Hmmm...Im not quite sure how to do this either.
You're saying all I have to do is go into the control panel of the domain I just purcahsed, and point it to my sub-domain on my other host?
Just wanna make sure I understand this correctly.
Thanks for the help!

You point the new domain at the same IP as your current domain and then add a server alias statement in your httpd.conf file for Apache so that it references subdomain.mydomain.com
