We just got another server with Alabanza and they have finally started usign Red Hat 6.1, PHP 4.0.0, Apache 1.3.12, and ApacheJServ 1.1. Kinda annoying since we have been asking for PHP4 and they keep saying it isn't tested...looks like it is tested. I haven't recevied any reply as to whether or not they can upgrade PHP3 machines. Just FYI

Really?
That's strange, I just got a server about a month ago and it still has PHP3 on it and the older version of Red Hat. Oh well, doesn't matter that much. I'm sure they will probably have some sort of upgrade plan available.

This was a server ordered last week, ready today. Wrote to Alabanza. here is the reply:

Our programmers are testing php4 with our existing software. I can't give you a date when it may be ready for release as an upgrade. Thank you.

Well, personally, I'm not in as big a rush for php4 as I am for an upgraded sendmail. What version is installed on the new server?

What's the problem with upgrading yourself? If they don't let you do what you want you might as well just go for a virtual server or resell.

Here's the reply I got:
Quote:
Brian,
We are currently working on making sure that the current servers with this software are stable and any errors are resolved. We hope to offer this upgrade in the future, however we would like to be sure that the software is stable and running smoothly before we offer this. Also, there are different issues that arise when creating new servers with this software as opposed to upgrading servers to this version from earlier versions. We wish to ensure that the upgrades can be completed error-free before offering this. We should be contacting all of our clients when this is available. Thank you for your interest and please feel free to contact us again at any time.
Thank you for your interest.

We are able to upgrade the software ourself, because we do have root access to the server. However you can't be sure if by doing this it would mess up the admin control panel/user control panels, etc. And if that happens, the change would not be supported. That's my understanding, anyway.

Alabanza has hooks in different places that I wouldn't want to screw up through a personal install..Plus if you dork it up, they take longer to fix it - mostly because they have to figure out what you did. I dorked permissions up with a poorly coded cgi...took forever to get it fixed

We all have root access to the server, so doing it is not the problem. The problem is that it might screw up something in the tools that Albnza provides. I'm more willing to do some manual work for my clients than I am to have them at risk to be without the things they need to administer their accounts.

Apparently the upgrade from 5.2 to 6.1 is a major headache for them, for a server with 60-100 domains on it can take upto a week to be fully transfered.

Maybe it would be faster for them to write detailed instructions, including any needed workarounds, and let most of us do it ourselves.

Boy, 15k a server must not pay the bills...I may be taking a very simplistic look here, but an automated script that pulls all required domain config files off, stores it, does the upgrade, then puts them back (evenif their is some parsing) should be worth their time.
