Astros no-hit the Yankees

Quote:
Roy Oswalt ambled to the Houston dugout after throwing two pitches in the second inning last night at Yankee Stadium, done for the evening because of a strained right groin muscle. The Yankees did not have a hit or a run off Oswalt, which seemed inconsequential because there were eight innings left.

But pitcher after pitcher followed Oswalt, the zeroes remained on the scoreboard and things grew more and more consequential. As the game progressed in the Astros' favor, the Yankees could not collect even one hit.

It is not often that Yankee Stadium gets eerily quiet, but it was that way last night. Yankee fans did not want to believe what they were seeing. Somehow, some way, the Yankees, who had not been held hitless in a game for 45 years, would eventually get one. By the nervous ninth inning, though, the zeroes were still there, and the fans leaned forward in their blue seats, occasionally clapped, cheered for foul balls. And waited.

When Billy Wagner induced Hideki Matsui to ground out to first base, the wait was over. The Astros had an 8-0 victory and the first no-hitter against the Yankees since 1958, the longest stretch in major league history. Six Houston pitchers contributed to the odd gem, breaking another major league mark; twice four pitchers had combined for no-hitters.
