Is Rackshack All That?

We've been keeping an eye on RackShack and considering getting a couple of servers with them. I've seen a lot of posts that say good things, and both myself and the owner of our company were very impressed at the way the outside fire was handled. We currently have servers with VenturesOnline and DedicatedNow. We've been very happy with VO, and we're praying that DN gets its issues worked out soon.

Anyhow, are they really all that and more?

They really have, but also manage their network very well.

Who oversells? RS, surprisingly, does not oversell their bandwidth

..... If each server was pushing their: Unmetered 10mbit or 400Gb/month or 1000Gb/month (depending on the plan) - do you actually think their network could spit it all out/in? Short answer: No.

How many servers do they have? Figuring 10,000 servers (not sure of the latest number, that's just a guess) all at 400GB (I'm not including the many 10Mbps server), that's 12.5Gbps. Yes they do oversell, but yes, they do it responsibly.

The dells are a perfect example of overselling - this is what it would cost a normal person:

Dual Xeon fully loaded - Lets say lease = 90$/month
1TB data (3mbit) - Lets say = 200$/month
32 IP's - Lets say = 15$/month
CPanel - RS's cost = 20$/month

So COST on this is well over 300$ - before factoring in routers/switches/power/rackspace/cables/setup time and so on....yet they rent them out at 299$/month for the 1TB package... how do they make their proffit? Overselling the network. Some people will only use 1GB/month - some use more, some use the whole thing...average it out though and they're safe.

This is also a prime example of how RS is killing the little guys, making such packages at a price nobody can compete with.

In December, netcraft counted 7300 servers; I'm sure it's considerably more than that now.

Not when you buy 2,000 of them...

Agreed and they prolly did buy them, not lease them. If it is a lease, they're prolly paying a nice premium to have a 1 year lease instead of 3 year - in 3 years those boxes wouldn't even rent for 99$/month

They may oversell a little, but network performance is excellent. We have a large number of servers with them and have never ever had an issue which is no dealt with quickly and professionally.

But remember, it isn't their amazing deals and solid network that is the reason behind their success. It is that they own WHT and posted a sticky about their company's emergency.

Oops - wrong thread.
