[rendering] Takes Aaaaaagggeesss! :(
Iam pretty new with 3ds max 5.
I was fooling around a bit and rendered a small image as background for a wallpaper.
I liked it as the background for the rest iam gonne do, so i wanted to render a large version (1600x1200) and edit it with photoshop.
Now iam rendering for 27 hours and the image is yet 30% completed.
This is taking me too long. Does anyone maybe know a faster renderer, an internet render that could help my computer render or an internet shared render, so you join a render network and all render together file by file? (such as kazaa, but instead of sharing bandwith, you share cpu power).
Or does maybe someone has a network and wanne give it a shot?
My machine xp2700@3400, 1024MB DDR 3200, Geforce4ti4400128mb

I can't afford 3dsmax, but some of the cheaper ones that I have come with a client that you can install (legally) on as many additional computers as you have to do a network render. Does 3dsmax have something like that? Or would you need a full license for each node?
However, I believe that 3dsmax also supports dual processor machines. You might install it on one. That would help.

find a nice multiprocessor system I too can't afford 3dsmax because of the price but the machines I've used it on had a few processors, and you could setup network renders to share around the love.
What sort of machine are you running it on now? Maybe drop back on the render effects/quality.

SGI is the way to go (if you can afford 3ds max you also can afford an SGI box).

I can't afford 3dmax either, but i have a student license. They aren't that expensive.
About dual processing. Iam already network rendering together with this 2700+@3400+ and an athlon 1800+@2100+
I found raytrace depth and set it from 9 to 2. That already reduced the rendertime with 80%
If anymore knows more like this, plz post
* NOTE: With this studentlicense iam NOT selling work. Just practising the tool.

I spent almost 3 weeks rendering a scene once, 1.8ghz box and a 1.4ghz box.

If you really want to render "fast", there are a couple options that I know of...
1. Reduce detail.
2. Setup a "render farm".
I'm lucky too... My renders usually span no more than 60 seconds, but I use hobbyist programs and they dont have radosity, DoF, raytracing, etc. :p

The same object without raytracing takes 5 seconds
If iam going to animate this it's going to last for ages with raytracing. I wanne start a renderfarm together with some friends that are online 24/7 trough the internet.
But i don't know if that's even possible.
I already found 8 guys that wanne help me render:
- Tbird 1000mhz
- Athlon XP 1800+
- Athlon XP 1500+
- Athlon XP 2000+
- Athlon XP 2100+
- P4 2000mhz
- p4 2800 mhz
- Mac G4 600mhz
And i got this 2700@3400 1800@2100 tbird900@1000 & mac g3-600 myself as well.
So if i get a network/internet render possibility to work, it would rock!

We'll, one of the most important points are the MOBO and RAM. Compare the same box with a GigaByte MOBO and CAS 2 RAM and a VIA MOBO and CAS 3 or 2 RAM . You'll find that the GigaByte MOBO powerd box would be nearly twice faster than the VIA.
About the post from platinum: Yeah, the hydra box would be the way to go (if you have a spare million) However, would be interesting to see how fast it renders the same scene (maybe you click on "render" and as soon as you click it's done )

I own a (asus a7n8x) Nforce2 chipset + athlon 2700@3400 + Geforce4ti4600 128mb + now even 2GB DDR 3200 CL 2-2-2 ram, Sqsi 15.000rpm disks.
It's the fastest mainboad atm, fastest memory as well (dual channel DDR) fastests sqsi disks, fast processor (3400+) and pretty fast gpu, that has nothing to do with rendering.
Besides that ALSO a gigabyte ga7vtx (via kt266a) + 1800@2100 + 1024mb crucial 2100DDR cl 2-2-2 + sqsi + ide 7200/2mb
I got the job done now in 9hours at maximum dept 2 instead of 9.
It's a good benchmark so if anyone wanne try, i'll send you the file.

Look for RenderMan. It is just the rendering eng. It was developed by Pixar and used for Toy Story.
If someone can afford Max. It doesnt mean they can afford a SGI box.
Try buying an Octane or an Onyx Reality Eng for $4k
