Weatherman Perfectly Pronounces 58-Letter Village Name, Takes Internet By Storm
"Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch."
There's probably no word too hard for this guy to pronounce.
Liam Dutton, a weatherman for British TV station Channel 4 News casually nailed Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch -- the name of a Welsh village, during a recent report. (No, that's not a typo. This place actually exists.)
His spot-on pronunciation of the village name, which actually translates to "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave," was shared in a video which was posted to Facebook on Tuesday. The clip quickly went viral with more than 1.7 million views and 18,200 shares. But is anyone surprised in its popularity? The man's basically achieved the impossible.
Watch as he just zips through the word as if he uses it every day, barely even blinking.

Interestingly enough, a (non-Welch) family member of mine is able to say this in full...not quite sure how, though. It's quite the mouthful...

It's actually well-known here in the UK, particularly in Welsh schools, and has it's own site showing how to pronounce it. I bet the weatherman just had this fed into the teleprompter.

Svetlana...Sveta...Svet. One of our twins, Russian born to her mom and now age 20 is a Svetlana. We call her Sveta.
Their Russian surname is Rozhdestvenskij but I adopted them and they've never used their Russian surname nor their mom anymore. They also consider themselves Americans and why not, they've been raised here since the ages of 3 years. The twins have never had accents and their mom has lost hers most of the time. She knew some British English when she got here and took ESL classes but sometimes the language of point had to get the job done for us.
My wife's first name is Anastasia. She was also given the name of her father which they do sometimes in their culture. When she rolls her name out in Russian all i can do is laugh and say..ok. I keep it on a card in my wallet because I can't even remember how to spell it.
I love to hear Russian spoken and at one time I could understand some of it. I've never been able to learn it so anytime we're in Russia my wife and daughters tell me to zipper my mouth and they'll do the talking for me. They never let me go out in public unless one of them is with me. The twins have problems with Russian sometimes because about the only time they hear it is when we're in Russia.
English is the spoken language in our home and my wife has been a US Citizen for about 13 years now.Last edited by bruc; 09-10-2015 at 06:54 PM.

Very cool. I remember a friend debated this in high school....what is your home...Canadian or your heritage. Most people would say the parents speak, cook, and act like their heritage at home, therefore that's what their home is. It was always funny to hear someone talk to get into argument with their parents. Friends talking in English and parents talking in a different language.
Losing accents, my mom lost hers after many years...except when she was angry. She was Jamaican and moved to the US for a few years and then Canada the rest of her life. She spoke with a mix of Jamaican, American, and Canadian.
I have many friends growing up were their parents used the English "version" of their names. Their natives names sounded similar and were cool.

We have some friends here in our valley that adopted a girl from Jamaica when she was 5 and now the same age as our twins. Being an inter culture family can be interesting and sometimes downright crazy and funny as you probably know especially in the beginning when the different cultures are trying to understand each other, clash on some things but in the end it works if you want it to work and usually makes for a very close family such as ours.
We also have two American daughters ages 19 and 17. And then... we have a daughter we adopted from Moscow at age 7 now 15 and she's a joy in all of our lives. She still has a little of her accent that sorta comes and goes.
We live in a Blue Ridge mt. valley where Bluegrass music is the norm and just good ole mountain folks here. I guess you would call all of our girls and the Jamaican girl about as American as you can get. Sveta plays fiddle, Anuta, her twin, plays banjo, one plays guitar, one plays mandolin and Elena is learning to play a dobro. The kid from Jamaica plays guitar and base. During the summer our back yard sounds and looks like a hillbilly hoedown and a bunch of mules clomping around when they're clogging, it's called flat footing here.
The girl from Jamaica is just like a member of our family, very intelligent and wants to become a surgeon and everyone knows that she'll be one in the future. My wife says that kid can out clog anyone in the valley, always smiling and can put down more bbq than a hungry groan man. We call her Pencil because she's 5'7'" tall and might weigh a 100 lbs.
I'm sure your mom was an awesome lady and an interesting lady.Last edited by bruc; 09-10-2015 at 09:15 PM.

Ya'll sound like a crazy TV Show.....in a good way A lot of fun and a lot of stories for years to come. My wife's side of the family is like that. The elders still laugh about stories from almost 60 years ago til now....and there's always new stories being made.
My girls are still young; 13 and twin who are 8. All of them are very creative and like to do everything. One twin in now in a gifted school. When she was younger, we could see her reverse engineering toys in her head which is what I would do. Put anything near me and I would take it apart to find out "how it works". She's also enjoys reading for hours and loves Minecraft. I setup a server for her to play with and she's created a bunch of worlds and with lots of details in each one. I recorded some of her work and plan to put it on YouTube. Her and her twin are starting to learning French and enjoying it. The oldest loves to write stories and her binder goes with her everywhere.
So much we could say about all our children that would take hours to write, while still having many adventures for them to explore.

Goodness, give that man a promotion! I work around some deadly chemicals and I can hardly pronounce some of the names so we have nick names for most of them. Props to this guy!
