When client pays for the web hosting services and get in return good service, high uptime, professional and fast support - they are most important attributes of web hosting company. How that could be reached from the end of web hosting company (quality hardware, network providers and stuff) is another story. Web hosting provider works for the clients and main task for the provider is to make clients happy.

For me the most important attribute is “Quality” . Let it be whatever; hardware, software used in the server, features or freebies provided with the account, support for the customers. Regardless of the particular attribute the quality in it is what every provider should focus on. As this will directly reflect in customer satisfaction and thereby progress for the host as well as the customer.

True, offering a good web hosting service with great support is the most important thing.

Also don't forget reasonable prices & features that can compete with the current market.

Quality hardware and quality support; if you have those, no matter your packages or services, your company is in for a successful business life - as quality hardware will lessen the risk of big technical problems, and quality support will grant the your clients' satisfaction.

    Honesty. Integrity. Goodwill.

They should at a minimum provide what they advertise but above and beyond that, there are some hosts that take an interest in you, and not your money when in communication. Small to medium sized hosts seem to 'fit the bill' perfectly, IMO.

By far, every hosting company needs to have solid support. If you have the infrastructure but not a strong team to maintain it, then your infrastructure becomes as good as your weakest link in your support department.

With that said, the basics would follow.
    - Solid uptime
    - Organized and maintained infrastructure
    - Proper training which would go back to support
    - Great values and ethics

But this list is not exhaustive. There're many aspects of a hosting company that are critical to successful operations. If you neglect one element of your business, everything topples over. (Similar to Jenga)

    All said above..my 2 cents.

Quality hardware with the proper setup. That alone reduces tickets to almost zero.

Customer service skills. Too many times we see hosts where the "owner" is too young to have ever worked a real life job that required interaction with people. They would have learned that they either have to learn to get along with people, especially customers, or end up being terminated and not able to pay rent or buy groceries.

Top notch support. Going above and beyond for the customer will being great results.

    Best hardware and network.

Great uptime is a must, nobody wants their site down.

Always have a backup plan in place in the event something goes wrong.

Being honest and respectful with customers goes a long way too.

Freebies! Customers always love extra perks .

In my opinion I think that support is important, but focusing too much on support means that there are problems, which isn't always good.

Key is probably having a stable network with short or text until no downtime. Also if we're talking about shared hosting; don't pack the servers so that people are running on poor speeds which is unbearable.

It all depends on the niche you cater and target, overall quality support and right price are the most common.

    Better hosting companies should have:

    1) Quality hardware and Network - Help in avoiding downtime

    2) Quality Support - Help in resolving issues quickly

    3) Knowledgeable Support - people that actually know the answers to your questions

    4) Companies that actually care about their customers

Yes I also do agree with you comment about younger "owners". Even though I don't have anything against younger owners, sometimes they can have a lack of either technical experience with running a host or social skills.

Yes I would also say that security is a big one. Last thing you want is a host being compromised due to lack of security. Respect is also a good one!

All the usual stuff such as good hardware, security and performance should be as standard with any company. Cost is not all that important as I would be happy to pay more for a better service. For me, customer support is critical. If things are going wrong and I need help I want to be confident knowing that I can get it quickly and easily.

I agree with @LampNetworks that honesty and integrity are very important. I would add that it is important for any serious provider to own infrastructure and network, but many would disagree saying that these are things anyone would get as IaaS. Service reliability and support are obviously things one would not question.
