Host Questions and Band Width

Hi,

What kind of questions do I need to be asking a host company that I want to host either a dedicated server or colocation server?

Also can someone please explain if possible, how to calculate how much data transfer I think my site will use per month?

I dont want to pay for 20GB when 5GB will do?

If we're still talking about Donhost.

Ask them about :
their bandwidth providers.
network uptime sla and what it includes and doesn't include.
Support guarantees.
Hardware policies and guarantees.
Network hardware equipment.
Support times and any costs for remote hands/ software troubleshooting.

As for bandwidth usage on a monthly data-transfer level. I would suggest asking if they can offer 95% bandwidth and if so, how much per Mbit/s. OR, if you wish to be billed per GB, if it's a 10mbit/s or 100mbit/s switch port you get and if they're is any pre-pair options for extra usage.

Hi,

Regarding:

Please can you explain what you mean by:

95% Bandwidth.
Pre-Pair Options.

Many Thanks

Daz...

Hi, i think Tazzy my be talking about 95th Percentile which is good in respect :

you wont pay for the large spikes you may have: ie any downloads or peak tranfsers etc:

it takes your avergage usage and you pay per Mbps you use.

This might help explain:

http://www.seanadams.com/95/

So you only pay for the average

Well, yes and no.

I was talking about the one where you take a mrtg report every 5 minutes and chop the top 5% off and pay for that. Which is more or less the same thing your talking about but actually explaining what it is.

How does this compare?

Hi,
my current dedicated webhost says that they charge using "Average Max". They say that it is similar to the way they themselves are actually billed for the bandwidth and that it works out cheaper than 95%.
Is this accurate information?
Thanks!
