Hi all,

When I compress a folder into an archive, I get all the files in the folder.

When I go to extract at the new server, is there a way to extra all of the files except the parent directory?

I know have to move all the files/folders up one directory.

Don't compress the parent folder with the rest? I assume you're tarring from a level above your folder, but you should be able to tar within the directory itself and use * instead of /folder in the tar creation process.

That's the easiest way for sure but if you already have an archive and need just a specific file you can tar -xf mytarfile.tar fileiwant.txt and get a listing of the contents with tar -tf mytarfile.tar

man tar will give you the skinny on all the options and there's LOTS of info/tutorials out on the net.
