    benefits of cloud hosting

Anyone who has gone from hardware hosting to using a Virtual server or cloud hosting.

Just trying to get a better understanding of all the different options.

To be honest, cloud nowadays is nothing but another fancy word to sell you a product. While cloud can to an extend allow benefits to scale, and target certain regions to market, to he average web hosting server you won't see the benefits as much. Most cloud providers use SSD to improve performance, the ability to upgrade, or downgrade due to the type of images they use(QCOW with VIRTIO). Will the server be online if a node on the cloud crashes? highly doubt it, will it prevent Hardware corruptions depends on the cloud setup how well the host block storage is.

My opinion Cloud is nothing but a sales pitch, Rack-space does it well, but even with them you will have problems, Or digital Ocean.

VPS cloud not a big deal, object storage for data storing Cloud is awesome.

The main difference between dedicated server hosting and cloud hosting is primirally two things. A dedicated server is just that - dedicated to you, where as a cloud server is typically a virtual server running on a multi-tennented platform with the cloud service provider.

One of the main advantages of cloud over dedicated, can often be high availability. Typically the cloud provider has employed some form of high availability solution meaning if the host the server is running on fails, the server can be bright online quickly on another host. Whilst this can be acvheived with dedicated servers, it becomes more expensive. Also there is a consideration with regards to portability. virtual servers can often be easily moved about, meaning you might be able to switch providers quicker.

Cloud can in some instances give you more freedom to expand as it will expand as your business grows.

Cloud or VPS hosting is more about:

    -flexibility
    -scalability
    -rapid deployment
    -easy migration

NOTE: IF you find a cloud provider ask them what type of block storage they are using, and cloud software? I can tell you from experience Onapp is very horrible and although its cloud for say its not a true cloud. Openstack is true cloud but the type of block storage the host has will make the difference on stability.

When was the last time you used an OnApp cloud? Initially there were most definitely some bugs with OnApp storage, especially due to the wide variety of hardware being used. It's pretty awesome now though -- I think even our harshest critics would be impressed.

Haha agreed, cloud is just hosting. People love the term cloud when it really does not make any sense. If you can work it into your marketing it seems to sell more.

The difference between Cloud Hosting and Shared hosting or Cloud Hosting and VPS can be insignificant to the end user. But cloud hosting does provides high availability, scalability and flexibility. However, such benefits are not tangible and those right in your face kind of differences. You will only appreciate such benefits when you need them.

if you want scalability and ability to instantly startup a new server in difference country/region, cloud hosting is the way to go.

You can't just simply move a physical server from New York to London within 5 minute can you ?

Some of these comments seem to be similar to a question - whats the difference between a truck and a car (IMHO). I agree, there are many that use the term or phrase cloud hosting but there are some significant difference in comparing a cloud server and a dedicated server. The comparison of cloud hosting versus shared hosting (e.g. cpanel) are a little more similar.

    For example:

A cloud server versus a dedicated server - IMHO there are multiple parts to offering a cloud server.

Phyiscal Host (the top layer platform that a cloud server resides). With a Cloud Infrastructure to perform correctly as intended, there should be at least 3 and ideally 7 hosts (physical server - vmware calls it an ESXi host) in a clustered environment whereby any vm (cloud server) resides. The virtualization application will monitor and move a vm around hosts as needed for best performance, or when Engineers take a host offline for maintenance or a host crashes.

But having multiple hosts is only one part of a cloud infrastructure.

Network - having multiple networks connected to each host (and vm) IMHO is a requirement, this allows for redundant networks in the event of a failure of a single provider or router failure (this can also be accomplished on a dedicated server with multiple NIC's)

Storage - on dedicated servers it is common to include physical hard drives into the server itself; and when you virtualize the server with physical hard drives it becomes a virtual private server (vps) but you now have a single point of failure and potential data loss. The solution is a Storage array or SAN that houses multiple hard drives in its own enclosure and a RAID card to help reduce (notice that it does not eliminate) data loss. The advantage with a SAN or a cluster of SAN's is your gaining redundant protection in the event a single drive failure or a complete SAN enclosure failure.

Additionally, VMware (and I am sure Citrix, Onapp, etc. do the same) allows you to create storage LUNS and put them into a Storage Cluster so, again, it will migrate your drives as needed for performance, maintenance and outages.

All three types (dedicated servers, VPS and cloud servers (vm)) can utilize the SAN solution.

In closing, a cloud server IMHO is easier to manage, support, backup and migrate than dedicated server, and a cloud server IMHO has High Availability inherit to its infrastructure all ready configured, out-of-the-box over the other two. Again, this is all my opinion without an intent to raise any arguments over the others. I still believe that there is a need for all three components.

Just to touch briefly on a shared "cloud" server versus a physical server (using cpanel as an example); the shared cloud server and physical server are almost the same with High availability built into the vm that is not in the physical server. But both are single servers.

With any cloud solution (at least for VMware) if the worse thing happens and you lose the vm and the data, you can quickly restore from a snapshot - hopefully the provider is snapping or backing up their infrastructure.

Again, this is my opinion that I thought I would add my 2 cents to.

Its probably worth noting that while snapshots are all well and good, they often reside on hardware closely linked to the customer facing VM infrastructure so offsite backups are good to have in addition to snapshots incase of wider hardware failures.

Correct Cyc02l! I did not mention it; but we utilize VEEAM instead of VMware snaps for our backups. We retain a local backup for instant recovery and send all backups out to multiple data centers for offsite backups.

    Thanks for the update!

The reason why cloud hosting is being pushed and promoted by certain companies is because *they* save a lot on resources and can virtualize a LOT of their hardware. This saves space, power, cooling and makes the most efficient use of all hardware. How much the client saves as well however depend on each individual company. Also, it's cool to market the term: "The Cloud".

Be careful of what you store online. Never know who might get to it someday.
