How long it takes for Domain Whois to Update

My domain is about to expire on April 19, 2015. I made the payment to renew the domain to my hosting provider on Wednesday. Since then I have checked the whois several times but the expiry date remains to be April 19, 2015. I contacted the hosting provider and asked them. I got the reply that domain has been renewed and the new expiry date will reflect in the whois data after April 19.

Is it really true? I contacted them again and they say that expiry date will be updated after April 19, 2015. They even assured me that my domain will not go down and if something happens, it would be their responsibility. I just wanted to know if what they say is indeed true.

Hello usually by paying the renewal domain registrant, that information is updated immediately, if you do not see the new expiration date possibly your hosting company has not made payment, hope to process your payment before the expiration date

better buy directly our domains and not use our hosting company for this.

The hosting company says that expiry date will update on April 19, 2015 which is the current expiry date. When I questioned this argument the company said don't worry we won't let anything happen to your domain. Its our responsibility.

They should have registered your domain to the length you have paid for it not just for a year. Perhaps they are trying to save on some money.

Is your provider a domain registrar or domain reseller ?

Who is your domain provider? and it should update almost directly after that you have paid, maybe it can take a few hours.

    You can go to :
    www.networksolutions.com
    www.godaddy.com
    www.namecheap.com
    www.name.com(*)

I use name.com without problems , I think is a good price for buying domains

Typically immediately upon renewal, the Whois data gets updated. I would recommend you to get in contact with them.

Only the initial domain registration/name server resolving takes time, the renewals make the records updated at the same moment itself, never heard of any delay at all.

    Hello.

If a domain expires and if you renew even during same day the domain will have some downtime due to propagation. Once a domain is expired registry chnage the nameservers of that particular domain to their servers until its renewed, so even if you renew in the same day it would take about 24 hours for the nameservers to update back to your server this creating some downtime. If a domain is renewed before the expiry date it should not create any downtime at all.

    Not really.

The dates change when the domain is 'renewed' (although a WHOIS output can be behind the 'real' data by a some time)

However not all domain types have an explicit 'renew' concept, they effectively auto-renew (where correctly setup) on/at/around the date shown as the 'expiry'

Without knowing the domain name it's impossible to give specifics though.
