email failing on check_rcpt

I recently applied the Sun patches to my RaQ4 and some customers are reporting an inability to send email. This is a typical message from the maillog file:

May 24 15:19:27 www sendmail[26181]: h4OKJR326181: ruleset=check_rcpt, arg1=<Brad.Robinson@mcsinet.com>, relay=adsl-67-116-7-48.dsl.snfc21.pacbell.net [67.116.7
.48], reject=550 5.7.1 <Brad.Robinson@mcsinet.com>... Relaying denied

I know that this is not a case of POP-before-SMTP, but rather it has something to do with the "ruleset=check_rcpt".

I am able to email the same recipient from my email account on the same server, but different domain. Any ideas?

After doing some research on sendmail.org, it seems in the newer versions of sendmail that relaying is automatically denied for non-local senders unless the POP before SMTP hack is running. Well, Cobalt's POP before SMTP is enabled and running, and poprelayd -p does list the IP addresses of people who have POP'd, but relaying is still denied.

Is there a newer version of POP before SMTP to install?
Does anyone know what the sendmail.cf file should look like to use the popip.db that POP before SMTP maintains?

One of the updates had made a copy of the sendmail.cf file and labeled it sendmail.cf.nopopauth. This copy had the POP-before-SMTP stuff in it. I rolled back to this copy and sendmail seems to be OK again.

MORAL: keep back-up copies of critical config files.
