Question

I am new to this and this my be naive, but - There is talk about satellite dish up & down links coming to my area within the next couple of months - Will it be possible to run an internet server, host sites and have direct access to the internet, via the up & down link - like an ISP?

Should be able to. As they are used in backbones.

I've never seen a sat as a backbone...

They have horrible lag time. As in it can take 10ms to 1 second for the data to get from you to the sat and back down to the ground.

Generally sat modems are not used for hosting as there are also bandwidth caps on a lot of them, if not then they are extremly expensive....

sincerely
Daniel~

If you mean those DirectPC satellites, they are expensive for little bandwidth and certainly not enough to run a site from..They limit the time as well from what I've seen.

DirectPC limit up to 400K for downstream and 128K for upstream.

Go with CableModem or DSL or your own T1

That all I know.

Normally when you use a dish, you will still need a modem to dial into your provider then the dish will be activated. For personal use this may be OK otherwise completely useless As it has been mention above, you'll be better of with ADSL/DSL and Cable modem.

Roberto, in answer to your question, probably not. It sounds like you want to put the server in your home and use the satellite as your connection. Even with a cable modem or DSL, I can think of several reasons NOT to do this.

1) Do you have a power backup?
2) Do you have a power generator?
3) Can you run the Air Conditioner 24/7?
4) Do you know the OS that you are planning to run inside and out?
5) Will you be available 24/7 for problems?
6) What happens if the cable or telephone lines come down, do you have an alternative way to the Internet?

In general if you want to do something like this, you should consider getting or co-locating a server with a company that can provide this.

Possible? Yep. Good? Nope. Good enough? Nope.
