Breaking: FCC passes so-called "Net Neutrality" regulations
Not sure what is in them because the 300+ pages of regulation are thus-far secret. But the basic upshot is the government is going to regulate the Internet (in the USA).
Proponents say regulation will prevent "fast lanes" and unequal access.
Opponents say, open your pocketbook. You're going to pay more for less.
It's the government. What could go wrong?Your IT Concierge

PS: I haven't really followed the US version of this much, but we have had the CRTC net neutrality rules for years in Canada. Dug this up http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/cr...rules-1.802999

Since the internet is now considered a public utility, now the government can stick there hand in our pocket for more taxes like they do for every other utility.
I see them taxing our internet for our home and maybe even force web hosters to start charging a tax for hosting. Who knows how far they would go.
Stay out of my pockets.....

SO...
now that the big ISP's have f*cked themselves and the rest of us because they cant run proper networks and want to charge websites/services to REACH them.....
I cant WAIT to see what this new "NATIONAL UTILITY" does for:
- New Regulations
- New Laws
- License Fees
- and OF COURSE since it is now a public utility, there WILL be NEW TAXES!
They better have a "golden" period in the beginning where becoming an officially licensed "utility" is easy and cheap/free... I am going to start a few different official licensed entities and keep them stored away for the ensured bleak future.

Nothing wrong with that. No, really, it'll be a nominal fee, which is fine. If it'll keep the ISP's from doing what they're clearly planning on doing, then fine.
Either way, you're going to pay more. This way, with government regulation, it's a nominal fee, as opposed to what it would be if the ISP's have their way, taxing every company to death, playing the fast-lane / slow-lane game.
This is essentially what it is, right here. ISPs refusing to regulate themselves, insisting on double dipping, hitting other providers for massive fees just to approach their networks (when their subscribers are already paying massive fees).
It would be GREAT if business would regulate itself, but hey, just like the medical industry, ISPs are going to go for the jugular every single time.

Everyone wants the Internet to remain free and open, but you have to question the intentions of those who seek political power when they change their mind on an issue and pass rules in secret. Politicians can and often do take advantage of good intentions to advance their own power or agenda. You can't really blame them for looking out for themselves.
We'll know more if/when the 300+ pages of rules are released. Until then, it's all speculation. Hope for the best?
