ftp via browser

A new client of mine is used to ftp'ing through his browserwindows by typing in ftp://www.domain.nl
When he does that on my Raq4 it says wrong login error 503(?).

Question 1: Is this possible or how do I transfer the username and password before he wants to connect to the ftp server.

Question 2: Is it possible to ftp through several sites at once (with of without a ftp program). Because the same client has 13 sites with me and with his previous hoster (W2000/NT) he could login with his ftp username and password and got acces to (only) his sites.

I'm sorry if I'm not very clear but my when you have questions do please leave a message.

Thanks in advance,
Theo

Try the following from the browser to download.

ftp://user:password@domain.tld

Uploading via browser requires use of an upload script.

Might try http://www.hotscripts.com. There are a lot of script sites that would likely have them.

We use PSupload from perlservices.com - free and very good
they have a paid version with a *lot* more functionality so clients can access private areas etc

first, my English is poor, so I cannot express properly, I hope you can understand......

you can use internet explorer perform this task.the steps below:
1.input the username and host address in the address dialog of internet explorer.
example: ftp://gsx@gsx.crcoo.com
gsx is my username, gsx.crcoo.com is my website.
http://www.crcoo.com/tutor/images/ieftp1.jpg

2.then , you can press enter key. internet explorer will popup a dialog prompt you input your password to login .

3.when you complete, internet explorer window will become a remote document of your ftp website. you can upload , download ,delete the files or folders of website like your local folder.

4.I tried , use internet explorer can ftp through several sites at once . but it is a simple but not best way to finish ftp work. I suggest you use the ftp software , like leapftp(I used) or cuteftp perform the ftp task.

For question 2, the way ownership is set up for virtual sites on the RaQ, there isn't any one user that can get access to more than one vsite (besides the 'admin' user). You will need to connect with a separate username for each vsite, unless you want to do a fair amount of manual tinkering with the /etc/passwd file, groups and ownership of directories, etc.

As a side note, do NOT use FTP as the 'admin' user either -- FTP is a clear-text protocol, and you'll be broadcasting the root password to your box to anyone who might be sniffing. Always use SCP or SFTP etc. (This actually is applicable for all users, but if you're talking about doing FTP through a browser, I'm assuming they won't be able to figure out SCP anyway).

Try the following from the browser to download.

ftp://user:password@domain.tld

Uploading via browser requires use of an upload script.
1) the use of the password in the URL is not very secure although it works and eventhough you'll provide the password in a unsecure way later with ftp://user@domain.tld anyway... But at least, it's not right beneath the user name.

2) I am using the browser for ftp-ing all the time and banned all ftp-clients by now. No script needed. The point is that with the address above, you get into the personal web directory of this user. If you wanna get to the site's web directory, you'll need to use ftp://user:password@domain.tld/../../web as siteadmin user.

Best regards
