Big gap in register fee, Why???

They can set prices at whatever they wish. People seem to be willing to pay... so it works out. If they can charge that much and remain profitable, I am impressed. GoDaddy gets more customers but sells for less so the profit for both might be about the same.

lets say godaddy is 10$ (about)
and register.com is 40$(about)

godaddy sells 4 million domains
40,000,000$
Register.com sells 1 million domains
40,000,000$

Just an example...

Why should everyone charge bottom of the barrel pricing?

Pricing for domains varies like anything else in life. Some companies use cheaper prices and bulk selling to pull a profit - other companies sell less but have a larger margin.

Also NetSol and Register have been around a long time, most of their customers started registering domains with them when there was no other choice. Chances are a lot of business will just continue to renew their domains at $35 rather than going to the precieved trouble and risk of transfering. Hence, if netsol reduced their prices they would taking an unnessecary reduced margin on this domains.

In other words - they are milking it - and why not!

That's exactly right. Note that NetSol and Register.com are both gradually losing domains, and low-price like registrars are gaining on them -- but NetSol is still raking in the most money, because it has so many long-time customers who are paying higher rates and either don't know they're getting ripped off or don't want to go to the trouble of researching other options and then switching providers (kind of like AT&T).

You guys complain when it's $10 and not $8.95

You should have paid $100 for 2 years back in the old days.

Mainly because even $10 is a ripoff. It's not the fault of the registrars, either; more than half of that goes to NetSol for running the central registry. The price should be $1 for NetSol plus whatever markup the registrar wants to add.

I think that 15 €/$ would be ok pricing for domains. ( lower = better )

If second-level names in .com, .net, .biz, etc., cost $10 each, then shouldn't third-level names in .co.uk, .kids.us, .pro, .name, etc., cost much less than that?

(3LDs in .name are priced about the same as 2LDs in .com, and .co.uk is a bit cheaper. But .kids.us and .pro are much more expensive.)

It should be....

An interesting topic.

As to for free, absolutely not. People would grab all possible domain names with no use for them. It would cause chaos. In fact, today's low prices encourage that. We were all far more selective in what we purchased when they were $70 for 2 years.

Frankly, they probably should be a bit higher to curtail domain speculation and limit domains to those who have a use for them (sorry Timechange...that impacts you and me). But, the problem I have is where the money goes. I have no problem whatsoever with the profits of godaddy, enom, opensrs, dotster, etc. I do however have a problem with the $6 which ends up within Verisign/Internic/Netsol. With the number of domains they have now, this provides them with an outrageous profit over the cost of administering and managing their business. I wish (I know I live in a dreamworld) there was a way to tax that cost and utilize the tax for the overall strengthening of the net.

If domains were free it would be chaos, it's pretty bad as it is now.
