Thumbs up 50 Things You Must Stop Saying At Work

    1. Reach Out – Just say call, speak, email etc. Unless you’re physically going to touch someone.
    2. Take off line - Talk about this later.
    3. Shift the goal post - This is just a sports metaphor for saying your goal was out of reach.
    4. Utilise – use!
    5. Elephant in the room - Unless it’s an actual elephant, this is pretty cliche.
    6. World-class - Has little to no actual meaning.
    7. Let’s run this up the flagpole - Get feedback.
    8. Socialise documents - Are you taking them to a cocktail party?
    9. Seamless - Unless you’re a clothing manufacturer, no.
    10. Get our ducks in the row - Organise.
    11. Monetise - Frankly, everything in business is “monetised,” so why do we need to talk about it?
    12. Workable Solution - As opposed to the non-workable ones.
    13. Engage - Be more specific here: show up, pay attention, comment, like, etc.
    14. Value-add - Everything you do should have value. Period.
    15. Transformational Change - What other kind of change is there?
    16. Circle back around - follow up
    17. Leverage - Usually has to do with making more money with less work.
    18. To be fair - Usually means you’re not going to be.
    19. Let’s re-group - Start over.
    20. OMG, LOL. - Never appropriate for business.
    21. It is what it is - So why are we talking about it?
    22. All Hands on Deck - Not unless you work on a ship.
    23. Apples-to-apples - Direct comparison.
    24. Actionable - Usually redundant. Do we want anything that isn’t actionable?
    25. Bad Guy - Usually from a boss who actually is the bad guy.
    26. Game changer - Almost never actually is.
    27. Low hanging fruit - It’s much easier to say ‘easy.’
    28. Accelerate - Hurry up.
    29. Crystallise - Make something clear.
    30. Bandwidth - Attention, time, etc.
    31. Beat the Street - If you’ve got a nickname for Wall Street, we don’t really want to talk to you.
    32. Thought-leadership - An example of, “if you are one, you don’t have to talk about it.”
    33. Bring to the Table - Show up and contribute.
    34. All-in Effort - As opposed to the half-arsed effort?
    35. Synergy - Something CEO types LOVE to say.
    36. Bull by the Horns - Only relevant to cowboys.
    37. Button-up - Finish.
    38. Sustainable - So often used as to be practically meaningless.
    39. Capabilities - What we do.
    40. Customer-centric - When you actually are, you don’t have to talk about it much.
    41. Downsize - Let’s just call a duck a duck, shall we?
    42. Elevator Pitch - Have you ever had the opportunity to pitch something in an elevator? I’m just curious.
    43. Face Time - This is an Apple product, not a management strategy.
    44. Incentivize - If you have to incentivize something, it’s probably incredibly boring and awful.
    45. Ninja - Unless you carry a sword, you’re not one.
    46. Par for the Course - Just makes me think of people in funny golf hats.
    47. Paradigm Shift - Change
    48. Strategic Partner - Hopefully all your partners are strategic. You’re not just choosing partners willy-nilly, are you?
    49. Proactive - Take action.
    50. Outside the Box - Should be outside your vocabulary.
    Respectfully,
    Mr. Terrence

I don't want to be the bad guy here, but I think we should think outside the box and synergize... In the cloud! (omg lol)
It should also be our incentive to ninja some low hanging fruit.

Sorry. It had to be done!

So right, many of the words/phrase are complicated for me, maybe because English is just a second language here in my country. And why do we need to make things (or words) complicated? Should be short and sweet

Kind words do miracles, be short but powerfull, don't spin around something, but just be clear. That should be done more by people

Thank God, we're not using any of these terms, except for #30...

Talk to people like you're face to face with them. Makes communicating a lot easier.

How strange, these are the minutes from my meeting with our CEO last week.

    --

I'll take this off line, utilise the new IM system and reach out to Dave so we can bring to the table a workable solution. That's probably going to need some face time with our strategic partners but if we can incentivize them to leverage their world-class capabilities and get all hands on deck then I think we've got a real game changer.

Before we do that we'll need to socialise some documents, run them up the flag pole with marketing and ensure we have a sustainable, customer-centric strategy that helps us accelerate the way we can get some quick wins from the low hanging fruit.

I really think this can work with a little proactive thought-leadership, but we need to consider that Mike is going to play the bad guy and shift the goal post so we simply have to re-group and circle back around to the other proposal we had last week. To be fair, I think he's only trying to make clear that we don't have the bandwidth for an all-in effort and sometimes we just need to beat the street and better monetise the clients we already have. We've all been here long enough to realise that sometimes it is what it is, and it's all par for the course.

Human resources are actually saying we might need to downsize and we'll need to button-up these new ideas anyway. If that happens then we'll really need our ducks in a row, have to think outside the box and probably resort to the occasional elevator pitch with some local CEOs.

I should crystallise, it's all about transformational change but we can't really offer any value-add to our clients unless we're thinking outside the box. If we're not offering an apples-to-apples comparrison with their current supplier then we're not in synergy with their objectives.

The bottom line is that in order to drive a seamless paradigm shift from where we are to where we want to be, we need some actionable ideas, a few individuals that can cut through the red tape ninja style and really grab the bull by the horns.

OMG, LOL. There's an elephant in the room. I told you we shouldn't have picked an office so close to the zoo!

Beat the Street - If you’ve got a nickname for Wall Street, we don’t really want to talk to you.

Someone explain to me how this phrase associates with Wall Street.

I'm old school and in my past career, Beat the Street meant going out all day and sometimes late hours of night. Meet people. Promote your music or show. Put up stickers. Basically advertise and promote....which when your job hunting...same thing Beat the street..hit the concrete....go door to door and drop resumes.

By following this list we are are slowly recruiting less and less humans and outsourcing to robots or humbots...

I mean like its power words here - like social marketing... We have partners operating in warehouses across the state..

or... We have strategic partners operating in world class warehouses across the state...

The thing is motivation staff don't want to know and nor your clients just have partners THEY want to know you have damn Strategic Partner so they can go home talk to associates/family/friends even your clients about those awesome new Strategic Partners your work hooked up with this week...

And if you think you have a game changer because you reduced prices or added ssl support damn well make sure everyone in the office knows... its a game change don't print out some crappy memo saying "And today we are reducing support coverage fees from $10 to free"... Sell your staff... and they will pick up the phones running hot...

People who talk like this, I cant take them seriously. Short & sweet, facts & details only. leave the buzz phrases to your advertising department that I wont take seriously either.

Also like 48-14, "beating the street" meant busting your ass all day at employers looking for work repeating until finding a job (not just an interview, but actually starting work).
Don't like what I say? Ignore me.
