$5 dollar reseller accounts
Hi
Does anybody know of any hosts offering any reseller accounts for $5 a month or less? I remember there were a few decent ones in January, any control panel. Also, how much space and bandwidth?
Thanks

For a start, you won't get ANY (even half) decent reseller plan for less than $20. It's just not economical for the host, and they won't be around for long.
If you are REALLY intent on finding a "host" for $5/mo then I would recommend you post this in the WebHosting Requests forum - but don't come crawling back when your "host" folds

There is a reputable company in the "Shared Webhosting Special Offers" section that offered 300MB 10GB multi domain account for $6.95, it is about 3 pages back right now, and also another well known, well thought of company around here that has a large reseller acccount for $13.50.

Are you honestly going to try and resell webhosting and become a webhost yourself for $5 a month?

Well, the packages you will offer will be fairly small. Say if you get a 10GB Transfer reseller for $5/month. Maybe you can stretch that across a couple domains, but not much.

http://Dixiesys.com at $10.00 month
Is about as low as you are going to get with a company that will be around awhile.

okishost.com offers a 25% off coupaon right now that puts their basic plan at around 11 dollars (pretty darn decent)
keep in mind that it's hard enough to get a regular quality hosting account for $5/month... much less a reseller account...
geez... some people spend $5/day on a pack of cigarettes or a beer... c'mon now..

I don't see how anyone who plans to run a web hosting company can even think about it at $5/month. Even at $20/month it seems ridiculous!

Well, I tried out a plan a person advertised for a $3 reseller account, I had complete silence after that, I knew it was BS.

Good point made by all...
But, if this guy did it wisely and only sold 2-5 accounts out of a small plan like that, it could help him get started. Have to admit, that's how I did. I started with a reseller plan that only cost me $7/mo and was pretty small. I sold 3 plans out of it and used what could be considered as a 4th plan for my own site. This produced a small profit that I was able to use to look for a better plan.
While this isn't the best way to start by any means, it does work. I made some mistakes (like trying to compete with you bigger guys selling my measly mini-plans) but it did give me both a starting point and time to learn more.
Now I've moved to a more realistic and larger plan that costs several times what I started with and am getting ready to re-launch in the next couple of days with plans that are more on target with the rest of the market.
Gotta start somewhere... and if that's why he wants a small reseller account then he could grow it from there

I think it is unfair to say that anybody offering hosting in the range of $20 is too cheap and 'won't be around long'. There are many current business models that allow a company to sell high bandwidth plans for low cost nowadays and still make a good profit.

I for one, would llove to see such a business model.
As a hint though check out prices on 10/100Mbps connections with co-locations, add into the mix special negotiated discounts, then do the math for a real rough idea.

Well to be honest, the person you get a such a reseller account from I would like to pat them on the back, as if they can supply such a service on a half decent server which would cost roughly about $200 a month thats if you expand the setup, software costs (modern bill etc... ) over a year.
As they would need 40 clients to make ends meet thats a ton of support to just make ends meet.
If they spend all their time offering their clients support to pay for their service they deserv a pat on the back, and hope they do well and stay in business for a long.
Regards

I don't mean that offensively. Also I better just reiterate that I am talking about $15-$20 reseller accounts - NOT $5 accounts.
And for 'whatever' if you post a request in the web hosting requests forum you will find a cheap reseller.Last edited by Melitaweb; 05-14-2003 at 09:08 AM.

well however much you say otherwise there are people who have been in business a long time offering these plans and have multiple servers. You can deny that as much as you want but the evidence is all around. If you cannot figure out how to offer a hosting plan at $20 and make a GOOD profit then you really do have to do some research or sack your advisers. Lots of companies manage it. Also if you are getting a ton of problems from only 40 clients I suggest hiring a decent sysadmin.
On a sidenote I would be interested to visit your company's site as we have a few clients interested in windows hosting and we deal in Linux. What is the address?Last edited by Melitaweb; 05-14-2003 at 10:16 AM.

We where talking about selling fully featured Reseller accounts for $5 a month not $20 hosting accounts as you can see from the first post.
The best of luck with your business model

I wonder how the host offering reseller accounts for $5 manage to put dinner on the table.
Assuming a $0.5 cut for Credit Card processing out of $5 the host is left with $4.5 only for his monthly service. Then he has to pay $99-$200 per month for his dedicated server.
If the host want to earn $4500/month (least required to live in big cities) then he has to sell 1000+ such accounts.
But he can not sell 1000+ accounts on one server so he has to have more than 1 server. Add other startup costs for a host like his own site and monthly bill for DSL connection costs go up by another hundred dollars per month and this does not include any monthly rental for office space or staff salary for even a single employee to maintain 1000+ accounts.
Since these figures does not add up thats the reason we see "XYZ host vanished" kinda threads on WHT frequently.
Sorry for too much rant.....

I agree.
There comes a cut off point where even if you are making a profit the amount of work involved outweighs the benefits. I also do not agree with $5 reseller accounts. I was responding to when the thread took a change in direction and started at people like me providing $15+ accounts. It is already getting hard enough in this industry without being lumped in with all the fly-by-night unlimited space only $1 per year hosts
As iThink and Tom have so rightly said though these companies tend to vanish. It is an old cliche but a good one 'if it's too good to be true.... etc etc'
