Have a look on the rackshack.net forum - there's a post on there with a step by step guide for what to do with a new server including patching, firewall and loads more.

If you can learn and implement everything on there then you're a good chunk of the way there (of course there's always more to learn).

Go ahead and pick up a "Linux Server Hacks" book.

Sometimes it's easier to see common exploits from a cracker's prospective ... and most of these books provide insight into how to patch the holes.

You'll need a book or manual; it might cost money, but it will save you hours scouring the internet for individual tutorials/articles.

Linux Server Hacks has about 2 pages on security. The main focus of the book is tweaking your server and was never intended to be a security book. Get "Real World Linux Security" by Bob Toxen. It's an excellent book.

I would recommend Hacking Linux Exposed. It gives examples of exploits and tells you how to secure against them.I believe its in its second edition now too.
