Google enters the domain registration business ($12)

    http://domains.google.com/about/

The Google Domains landing page has links like “Manage my domains” and “Transfer a domain name.” A separate Features page shows what Google is planning for this service:

    - $12 domain registrations
    - no extra cost for private registrations
    - email aliases
    - customizable sub-domains
    - domain management tools (i.e., CNAME records, etc.)

Agreed, bad enough we've started getting GoDaddy ads here in the UK now.. Although that being said it does look quite promising.

    Let's see:
    1) how Google does at phone support (few if any Google products have it) and with the difficulties and customer issues associated with domain registration.
    2) how they handle spam and abuse complaints - and if any penalties affect your other Google accounts (Adsense, Gmail...)
    3) if they will accept Paypal. (I doubt it)

I'm tempted to give them a try but Google is starting (well is already maybe) making me nervous about having their hands in so many markets. Convenience of everything in one place vs one company in control of everything.

My thoughts as well on 1 and 2. I'm sure they got some folks experienced in the registrar biz to handle that (which they have to, anyway).

It is by invitation only as of now. You currently need an invitation code to buy or transfer a domain as per the site.

I am not sure they would want yet another antitrust case.

However $12 for this rather competitive market is a bit disappointing. But I assume people who are not too much into domains wouldnt mind.

I've phased almost entirely away from all Google services, if one can believe that. They've got their fingers in too much, and I don't like it. :/

I think they just target different market. Their business is not going to focus on just domains rather on enabling a person/company to be visible in the Internet [so they can also sell them some AdWords]. One way or another - they will still have their chunk.

$12 is competitive for a non-reseller account, and includes WHOIS privacy. It's cheaper than GoDaddy (35% market share), costs a dollar more than Name or Namecheap but is cheaper when you factor in WHOIS privacy.

Google please stop moving to all markets.Leave some space for others
Joking aside, they will need to drop the price below to like 10 usd to make the registration attractive

This is probably true (see also my but).

Cheaper than godaddy doesnt necessarily mean a lot

I wouldnt call $12 as highly competitive, as you can get the same service already for $9 (which is about 25% less). But as I already said before, the targeted audience might not know or mind.
