Depending on what kind of connection you will need, you will probably need some nice big switches. Also UPSs and Tabe Backups are key. You will also need some fire protection equipment and water is not such a good idea.

A better option:
Buy a house beside a datacenter

Now why in the heck did I not think of the porta-poddy thing before now!!!! *bangs head on keyboard*
It should probably be noted to "NOT build a datacenter in your house." The raised flooring would make it rough on a tall man!

I have what could be described as a small datacenter in my home, I have around 15 linux boxes running misc services. 2 24 port hubs and one 12 port hub.
I also have a Windows 2000 Server (domain controller, for file centralization such has mp3s), and OpenBSD router/firewall.
This does not include the 5 or so desktops running Win2k,Win98,Win95
Its a great setup, its also is battery backed up. It all runs off of my speakeasy SDSL line.
I wouldn't ever really recommend using something like it for hosting clients though, I have had times when it took me 10 or 20 minutes to bring up the router and fix stuff. Clients wouldve killed me about ten times over by now....
On the other hand I have a friend with about triple the equipment, and 4 t1s+ 2 sdsl connections to his house. He has a generator and APCs. He allows people to colo with him in his basement.....

I know lots of people with "Date centers" in there houses.
Me, i have a mix of:
2 Wintel boxes - workstations.
1 Sunblade Workstation
1. Sun 220R - does remote backups.
1. 10 tape DLT exchanger.
I just use my "data center" for work from home and remote backups as well as pleasure..
i have a mix of other pc's from old HP's to OLD Sun's and SGI's but i don't count them in my grouping of constantly used PC's
BUT i basically mirror my servers to home and everynight i update the mirrors with what changed.. really it only took a while the first time and seconds for every machine on a nightly basis.
I use comcast @home "pro" with 3mb down and have been very happy!

thehostworks. Our basement is a finished full basement with 8.5 foot ceilings. Fully air conditioned and heated. Seperate Generator for the basement. My basement is VERY suitable for a data center.

Alex
