FCC to Propose New ‘Net Neutrality’ Rules

The Federal Communications Commission plans to propose new open Internet rules that would allow content companies to pay Internet service providers for special access to consumers, according to a person familiar with the proposal.

The proposed rules would prevent the service providers from blocking or discriminating against specific websites, but would allow broadband providers to give some traffic preferential treatment, so long as such arrangements are available on “commercially reasonable” terms for all interested content companies. Whether the terms are commercially reasonable would be decided by the FCC on a case by case basis.

I don't like how the FCC is bowing to corporate interests.

I guess future US market will be similar to current HK market.
Either pay USD$100/mbps to China Telecom, or else get high latency and packet loss to China telecom's network.

broadband need to be reclassified as a telecommunication service, net neutrality has been the only pillar keeping this disaster of home internet service we have functional, the root of the problem is the failure of classifying broadband as telecommunication service.

I read this, and I am not a fan at all.

I will personally be submitting comments to the FCC on this. The FCC allows public comment from anyone.

Eventhough I do not live in the US, the affects on my own use of US sites and my company would be quite considerable so it's worrying.

I understand it should only affect US consumer connections.

Ah yes, at least my own internet usage won't be affected then but my customers who live in the US using my US services may be affected. If it passes in the US, it may not be long before it comes to the UK.

This is so frustrating to see the conflicts of interest in the FCC...sigh

Well, from the recent changes your services should at least not be throttled anymore but only not prioritised over others.

As for the UK, only recently the EU Parliament voted in favour of network neutrality - http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-26865869

even though it does seem the UK wants to torpedo this once again - http://rt.com/news/159108-uk-block-net-neutrality/

Telecom laws are decades old and need a major overhaul before it is even considered to be reclassified. We just less than 10 years ago ended a tax that was imposed to fund the Spanish American war over 100 years prior. The laws are very outdated and really a pain. I don't even do anything with telephone and have to file yearly reports now stating as such. I really want nothing to do with that mess as it is now.

    Precisely!

Interesting following the two threads about this issue. While ostensibly a technology issue, it has united the political right and left unlike pretty much any other issue. (This observation is not a reflection on @Stephen's comment.)
