To get 100% uptime I would say you need to get a cloud cluster. When a cloud VPS fails another copy is rebuilt and issued. You would be best proxying it via a DDOS protection service like BlackLotus.

You could look at OnApp servers.

    REDUNDANCY

In todays world you need to have Redundancy.
A single server for all your needs is never an option.

Make sure you have one extra server in another location, just to make sure that if your main server fails, the backup server kicks in immediately. The different location is imp here just because if the ISP or the data center has a DDOS attack, the backup server as is in a different location will not be affected.

This may help you obtain NEARLY 100% uptime.

as many stated 100% uptime is impossible but you can get incredible close to it.

100% uptime exists just as much as having unlimited amount of money in your wallet. It will never happen.

100% is possible only for small-scale setups.

Let's say you want to run a website that is mission critical and money is not a problem.
You purchase 5-10 servers globally, all in different locations. Then setup a couple of them as load balancers and the rest as application servers.

When someone opens your website, it will redirect to a load balancer which will figure out which application server to send the visitor to.

This means if your site gets DDoS'ed, there will be other servers to have it up and running since the DDoS will affect only 1 server.

No, it really doesn't. It just means the load balancer will collapse under the attack and you'll be down, instead of a server doing the same.

I work for an advertising agency, and our servers host statistics tracking software.

How that works is all the advertising the firm does online, is linked to the domain name hosted by the server. Based on criteria, the incoming visitor is sent on based on his geo location, browser, mobile phone, etc -- so all the server does is keep stats and dynamically route incoming traffic to their final destination.

There was an issue on one of our servers last night where the managed host claimed it was fixed within 5 minutes of going down, but they never really checked (since they could not) if the redirections/stats logging was actually working from a visitors stand point. So we lost a lot of revenue in 7 hours the site was actually down, while we on our time zone all slept.

This stats server is mission critical, we need it to be up 99.99999% of the time, if not 100% of the time.

Is there a server setup which can ensure 100% up time on the website? What is this solution called?

What about managed services, what company can offer management where if the server goes down, they jump on it in the first minute? And PROPERLY verify to make sure it really is back up?
You are using a TDS (Traffic Distribution System). When choosing a server, get one with at least 100 mbit connection. If you get many visitors at once, you don't want them to crash your network!

There are many companies that claim to have 100% uptime while few really do. There are many factors, such as, storms, DDoS attacks and failed hardware that can prevent 100% uptime. The datacenter network may be up 100%, however, your server could go down because of a DDoS attack.

Pretty simple answer to this post really, choose a good host and buy a dedicated server, you can get almost 100% uptime with other hosting packages such as kvm and ovz then shared hosting which is never going to be100% - uptime.

    re: 100% uptime

100% long as possible until the first time it is crash the system

  12. #87
You can't. Good luck believing otherwise.

Seems like everyone has different views whether 100% uptime is attainable or not.

That's called experience vs. knowledge Those of us with enough experience know that those with just the knowledge will learn the hard way eventually

Couldn't agree with this statement anymore. By all means you can try your hardest to maintain a 100% uptime, but you can never guarantee it.
Maybe technology will change in the future which will change this statement, but for now you cannot promise 100% uptime

For a normal website you can have 100% uptime for as little as $60/year. All you need is 2 geographically diverse VPSs that are replicated to each other in real-time and you can either roll your own DNS service and heartbeat or use DNSMadeEasy for $30/year with DNS failover.

Um, or the DNS service (DNSMadeEasy) goes down. That setup does not provide 100% uptime, by any means.

DNSMadeEasy has provided the highest historical uptime over the past 13 years (99.9999% uptime). But yes, even they had one instance of a regional outage. But if you used them and secondary DNS with someone else, you would have been fine.

Overall though..... I do not think you can find a more reliable DNS provider than DNS Made Easy. They handle DNS like champs. Hence that is why WebHostingTalk uses them.

I really need to unsubscribe from this silly thread.

    1. "100% uptime" without specifying time span is a bull..it metric.

    2. All people who are saying about 100% up-time, just GO LEARN probabilities theory, THINK and if it is still could be achieved in your head, repeat the cycle until it is not.

The close to 100% vmware vps's we work with reboot to another server hardware within 5 minutes. Most 100% guarantees just refund part of your subscription based on the downtime. Giving some money back when the uptime is less then 100% that's possible. 0 minutes downtime over 5 years, that's almost impossible. 10 minutes downtime per year that's possible with a minimum of luck.

    Exclamation Really?

This is a REALLY vapid question, and this thread should be locked..
One can't simply find any host with 100% up-time! Even if a hosting provider guarantied 100% up-time, sooner, or later, their server(s) will go down for a specific period of time. Well, I hope I've answered your question.
