    Upload center (file sharing) configuration

    Hello!
I saw upload centers (file sharer) use urls like "server1.example.com/downloadlink" and "server2.example.com/downloadlink" and so on.
    1. Why they use such!?
    2. Do they add separate servers to their site and it make them to do that way?
    3. Can I buy hosting and link it to my subdomains?

You can add as many subdomain/A records as you like. You just need to tell the webserver what the domains are and they will point that domain to the appropriate directory. You can also point A records to multiple ip's on one or many servers. As long as the webserver is setup correctly, it will answer properly to each web request. The file sharing site is probably doing it for load balancing.

This configuration is being done in the file sharing script itself. Depending on the file sharing script you use, you can set it to use multiple upload servers. These servers are named generally in the server1.domain.com or server2.domain.com pattern.

Whether it's legal or not is moot really. You can host a site on one server and host subdomains on another server by creating A records regardless as long as it's setup correctly form the main hosting account.

File hosting websites do this because they get a lot of files uploaded and bandwidth. You can't serve all the content from a single server. If one goes down other web servers will still be setup to transfer files between the servers and the users.
