In the future just pop the processors in to these benchmark sites. I am not sure they are scientifically proven but they give you a relative way to compare the processors:

The only way the E5506 could possibly provide an advantage is if its a Dual E5506 server with 2 physical processors. Even then, without hyperthreading the performance would still probably lag behind the single E3-1270.

E3-1270 all the way given all the rest of the components being the same. If the Dual is packed with RAID and lots of RAM vs little RAM and a single drive, AND your application is hosting related, I would take the RAM and RAID vs the fast CPU.
The rest of the components usually matter more in most hosting environments (even though most customers don't realize this so they will ask for the newest CPU over other more crucial components).TailorMadeServers.Com - Dallas Dedicated Servers since 2003

E55xx are times slower than E3-12xx. E3 servers just fly.

E3 1270 would be fast compared to E5506.
E5506 are very slow CPU and most of them are on old motherboards.

Always go for newer technology =) 1270 was the better choice I will go for (Dual)E5506 for virtualization.

If you're only looking for a single processor with less than 32GB of RAM the 1270 would be better.
