Really need a dedicated host recommendation

    Hi Everyone,

First I wanted to say how valuable a forum this is. I’ve been lurking for year and have always for really good information on the forum, but now I need some help.

I know I can search the offers section, but I would really like to hear some recommendations of a good US dedicated host.

I currently have a server with SoftLayer and I’m ready to move on. The server is over 3 years old and is on its last legs. SoftLayer is OK, but I’m looking for something a little more economical.

My current config is a Windows 2008 R2 Dual Xeon 5405 2.0GHZ Quad Core (total 8). 12 GB Ram and 280 GB Drive. I currently have a 4000 GB data plan but average less than half of that. I do anticipate higher usage this year so a 10TB plan will be best.

I would like something that faster with about 16GB of ram and at least 500GB SAS 15k drives, but would settle for SATA. I would like to stay around $200.00 per month unmanaged.

Any suggestions you have is much appreciated.

    Thanks

A decent E3-series should help you save a lot of money already compared to a dual cpu setup.
What location would you prefer to have this server at?

Thanks for the reply. In the US on the east coast is preferable. Thanks!

How much bandwidth do you need?

The OP state that he needed 10TB of bandwidth ( more or less ). I can't think of many hosts that could deliver dual CPU setups for $200 but I'll reply if I find one.

I am curious if the Windows license is included in your expected budget? About how many IPs would you need?

Any E3 should be able to stay under that price pretty easily. You could look at getting a 250 GB SSD possibly (and drop a second one in later) and still stay under that depending on your OS! There are quite a few hosts out there that should be able to meet your needs!

Thanks Alkaline, I don't need a dual cpu. That is just my current specs. If I can get better performance on newer hardware with a single cpu then I'm in.

    Thanks

    Thanks Brian,
I've seen Win 2k8R2 for as little as $20/month. I prefer a host that has the option or I can provide mine.

    Thanks

I am going to recommend Reliablesite.net. Take a look at the E3-1230 or 1245 clearance offer from their website. 2008 R2 Standard is listed for $25 on their order page. Make sure you add the given coupon code if you sign-up to apply the clearance sale.

    Thank you for your recommendation!

For the OP, I would recommend a SSD instead of the 15K SAS drive. You will get tons more performance and your budget allows for a large one.

Oplink.net is a completely independent separate company vs QuickPacket. We have no relationship with QuickPacket. Thanks for considering us Oplink

I must Clarify , I never meant to create a confusion here.
QPS & OPLINK both are top notch ( Distinct & Separate ) providers and Grouping them together was just a matter of chance.

I suggest having a look at Limestone Networks for self-managed servers. I've had equipment with them for nearly two years now. Very solid & reliable hardware/network and the staff is awesome to work with. http://limestonenetworks.com/
