I have a question that I hope that some might be able to answer?
I have a basic WordPress website and would like to set up a forum area where people could come and discuss areas related to HDR Photography. Do I need a plug in of some sort to make this work or ????.
I will appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction.
You can install bbPress in wordpress plugin. or you can install forum software another directory or subdomain then link with main website.

I will recommend use of any main forum script like mybb and install in a sub-domain like forum.domain.com
If you want to use paid script, I will recommend Xenforo.

If you wish to have an Integrated forum , within wordpress , then certainly there are plugins for this. this will save your time n money for customization of the forum as no separate design shall be needed for the forum itself.
On the other hand , if you need more control more features in the forum go for a forum as ravi suggested above. However, this will need a custom design (if required ) to match your blog.
On thing I would warn you about that I just talked to another client about is that the forum is going to use a lot more memory than a traditional WordPress website. The more users you have the more MySql connections that are going to be required. Using a WordPress friendly BB will greatly help you out with user management and other things down the road it will also potentially use less MySql resources. In addition to the BB options your high res images are going to take a load on the server. Installing these separately I would recommend a VPS as your membership grows your resource usage will be intense. Adding These types of images is also a separate case for a VPS as you will be using a lot of resources for just showing the images.
Actually using a subdomain will be perfect, because in this you wont mess up with the blog and the forum content.
bbpress is a good plugin, I ve used this before and it has good compatibility!
this is probably best, if you must use a 3rd party forum.
the reason to separate it from your website is obvious - these forums are easily hacked and never secured well (even if you keep it up to date).
The only safe forum you'll get is if you custom code one
Thank you everyone for the information, I will try out bbpress and see where that goes. The only concern is the comparability with the Wordpress Theme that I use. I am presently using the "Landscape" theme if anyone has any information on problems that I might have I would appreciate hearing about that.
