Question Most effective use of $80

    Hi,
I have an $80 monthly budget for a Windows server.

It can be Dedicated or VPS, here are the specs I need:

    1. RDP Access.
    2. 1.5GB RAM
    3. 5TB bandwidth
    4. 40-50GB HD space (SSD cached).
    5. As much processing power as possible within the budget.

I plan to run a few wordpress sites and file mirroring (which is the reason for the bandwidth requirement).

The intent is to replace an aging 2ghz P4 with 512mb RAM running Win 2003 server hosted with SoftLayer (originally ThePlanet).

I'm considering VPS.NET, but I'm not sure, I am interested in your opinions.

Sorry, but to clarify, is it $80 per month or $80 per year?

If you are just planning to run WP, then go for Linux as it will save you money for the windows license.

Exactly. The Windows license is going to cost you, and there are a lot more Linux providers than Windows. You'll be able to get a lot more for $80/month from a Linux provider.

I'd recommend you to have a look at WiredTree or KnownHost. These are two providers who fit within your price range (although your bandwidth needs are rather heavy). You'd be best to contact the sales departments of either of these hosts.

The server will be file mirrors and service host for some custom windows services, so a windows license is required...

Yeah, but Windows has MUCH better permission than Linux. That's the main reason WP users sometimes pick Windows.

And it runs the PHP just as fast (maybe faster).

But of course, as you say, you pay extra for this. With an $80 budget, you've got several options. I'd consider a higher-end VPS from LiquidWeb. But Windows needs to be 2GB, so it's about $100/monthly for managed Windows.

Gearhost has 2GB "cloud servers" (VPS) for $75. That's a good host too.

    Care to elaborate?

You must be doing wrong in Linux if you do not have better permission for the account or even in script.
