We're getting a new server to be used for web hosting (apache & mysql). 8 x 600GB 15k SAS drives in a raid 10 (hardware raid) array. What's the best strip-size to chose for the array build?
Would likely depend on your specific application/needs. We just tested Raid-5 versus Raid-10 in both 64K and 1024K and determined Raid-5 with a 64K stripe was best for our needs since the application we were building for was mostly random reads with minor writes.
This would be for web hosting - mostly apache and mySQL. We ran some tests and RAID 10 does offer benefits (vs. the RAID 5 we run now), but I'm still not sure on strip sizes. I've heard opposite philosophies - some people say smallest is better, some say largest is better.
