How to test i/o speed and network speed?

    I saw this somewhere:

    CPU model : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1240 V2 @ 3.40GHz
    Number of cores : 4
    CPU frequency : 2128.000 MHz
Total amount of ram : 2048 MB
Total amount of swap : 0 MB
    System uptime : 18 min,
    Download speed from CacheFly: 103MB/s
Download speed from Coloat, Atlanta GA: 8.64MB/s
Download speed from Softlayer, Dallas, TX: 8.28MB/s
Download speed from Linode, Tokyo, JP: 4.42MB/s
Download speed from, Rotterdam, NL: 32.3MB/s
Download speed from Linode, London, UK: 26.4MB/s
Download speed from Leaseweb, Haarlem, NL: 31.5MB/s
Download speed from Softlayer, Singapore: 3.50MB/s
Download speed from Softlayer, Seattle, WA: 6.81MB/s
Download speed from Softlayer, San Jose, CA: 6.77MB/s
Download speed from Softlayer, Washington, DC: 10.9MB/s
    I/O speed : 155 MB/s
How is a test like this conducted? I know of different ways to test network speed / i/o speed, but I'd like to know how this specific test is done. :O

You can use hdparm to check the I/O of the hdd

Furthermore, you can use the 'top' command to check the system uptime and the following to display the cpu and ram info

    display cpu: cat /proc/cpuinfo
    display ram: free -m

Install ioping and take a look at the various modes you can use it with:

To really test hard drive performance you need to see how it deals with both reading and writing, and it's entirely possible for a hard drive to be excellent at one but awful at the other.

Also, note that you can choose between cached and direct IO with ioping. You might not be aware of this, but when a file is accessed in Linux the operating system caches that file in RAM until the RAM is needed for something else — that's what the 'buffers' section is when you use the 'free -m' command, and that's why it's good to keep a decent portion of RAM spare. Using the direct option in ioping allows you to bypass this, seeing how your hard drive deals with files that haven't been accessed recently or ever.

Of course, in reality many of your requests will be cached due to the way that most applications work and that'll be faster than any hard drive (SSD or not) can deliver. Remember that before getting too obsessed with IO performance.

For network speed, mainly for downloads you could just use wget on a test 100 mb file.
