    Upgrading Centos 5.10 to 6.5 On Remote VPS?

    I want to upgrade my CentOS installation from 5.10 to 6.5 on a remote VPS that I have. I don't have any important data on the VPS. My VPS provider doesn't have reinstall images except the 5.10 and debian 5.

    Have you checked with your host whether CentOS 6.5 will be compatible on their VPS node?

    It's strongly recommended to do a fresh install of CentOS 6 rather than upgrading.

    Why not request version 6.x instead from your provider?

    If they are using XEN, you can do that, if you contact your provider and ask him to change your VPS config from sda to xvda after you upgraded your VPS.

    They are saying 6.x is not available as a template on SolusVM.

    I am either stuck on 5.10 or I have to upgrade or reinstall the OS myself.

    If it's an OpenVZ VPS send them this;

    If it's KVM send them this;

    If it's Xen send them this;

    With CentOS 7 around the corner, there's no excuse not to have 6 available.

    The support people aren't helpful at all. They said they won't be able to load any new OS templates. I know that I should just ditch them but I have already paid for it for another year. Any help would be really appreciated.

    There are definitely CentOS 6.x templates available for SolusVM. If your current host refuses to make CentOS6 templates available to you, you need to drop your current host.

    The biggest problem you are going to run into is there is no way to easily upgrade from CentOS5 to CentOS6 without re-installing the OS fresh. You cannot simply insert a disk and upgrade from 5 to 6.

    In theory, you can try using "linux upgradeany", but that upgrade path is NOT officially supported and can possible break your existing system. The official method for upgrading is to take a backup of everything important, install the new OS fresh, and then restore the important content (web files, databases, etc).

    Are they simply a reseller of someone? Why they won't be able to load?
