Talking Candy Crush developer thinks players are stupid. Patents the word Candy. After Saga!

King, Candy Crush Saga developer to Games Industry:
"We have trademarked the word 'Candy' in the EU, as our IP is constantly being infringed and we have to enforce our rights and to protect our players from confusion."

King goes after the developer of a slot game called Candy Casino Slots for the use of the word "Candy":
"The particular App in this instance was called 'Candy Casino Slots - Jewels Craze Connect: Big Blast Mania Land', but its icon in the App store just says 'Candy Slots', focussing heavily on our trademark. As well as infringing our and other developer's IP, use of keywords like this as an App name is also a clear breach of Apple's terms of use. We believe this App name was a a calculated attempt to use other companies' IP to enhance its own games, through means such as search rankings."

King filed a trademark for the word "Saga"... goes after developer of a Viking stragedy game called The Banner Saga so their players don't confuse it for Candy Crush Saga and others:
"King has not and is not trying to stop Banner Saga from using its name. We do not have any concerns that Banner Saga is trying build on our brand or our content. However, like any prudent company, we need to take all appropriate steps to protect our IP, both now and in the future.”

“In this case, that means preserving our ability to enforce our rights in cases where other developers may try to use the Saga mark in a way which infringes our IP rights and causes player confusion. If we had not opposed Banner Saga’s trade mark application, it would be much easier for real copy cats to argue that their use of ‘Saga’ was legitimate.”

“This is an important issue for King because we already have a series of games where ‘Saga’ is key to the brand which our players associate with a King game; Candy Crush Saga, Bubble Witch Saga, Pet Rescue Saga, Farm Heroes Saga and so on. All of these titles have already faced substantive trademark and copyright issues with clones.”

Also mentions their file for the trademark "Candy" and their dislike for Candy Casino Slots.

Hah, copied puzzle games of old, which has nothing at all to do with any saga, sues a game that actually has something to do with saga.

They aren't even in the same market. Those games aren't even the same genre and those games don't even target the same audience.

I guess any publicity is good publicity but this could end ugly for Kings. Knowing laws and how weird it can be, Kings might win or the developers of the indie game might just bend over but there could be some boycotting for Kings' games in the future.

Just think, all of this wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for the Popcap team and the Bejewled game. Candy Crush players need to go get and play the original gem that started it all.

The indie devs of candy casino slots already caved with a bit of satirical remarks to add.

I'm really hoping banner saga will hold their position given they're considerably bigger than candy casino slots (one person). The whole thing is really laughable.

Candy crush is an obvious rip off of bejeweled. Yet, they're bullying others by saying others are ripping them off... not even by game content but just having one shared keyword.

The legal side of this whole story if full of BS too. King filed for registered trademark, they did not get approved yet. Other companies have a 30day duration in which they can challenge King's application. But from the moment it was filed, King's pretending as if they're already approved and shutting down other people from using names with such words in it. It's completely load of bull. But little indie devs won't have the legal power to even contest it.

Most if not all of Kings titles have been ripoffs or what they consider "better" versions of other games. Candy Crush and Papa Pear Saga are two off the top of my head that I know they copied or made "better". I prefer Bejeweled though.

Frankly, I'm torn on a lot of these trademarks. I sometimes see where other developers -are- trying to take advantage of the name and/or confuse users. Of course, some trademarks are ridiculously broad!
